With acceptance rates at historical lows, students cannot help but ask: what does it take? Get an insider’s, first-hand perspective on the US admissions process, and on what you need to do to make your profile stand out among an increasingly competitive applicant pool.

Important Message Regarding Netflix Show

Dear UAS Parents,

As school counselors, we feel that it is our duty to inform you about a television series that is very popular with many of our students, a Netflix series called “13 Reasons Why”. The show is about a teenage girl, Hannah Baker, who completes suicide and leaves behind 13 tapes for specific people that explain how she feels they contributed to her suicide. There is a theme of revenge for bullying behavior in the content of the tapes. The episodes are intense, graphic, and contain scenes of self-harm and a depiction of Hannah’s suicide. It also covers the topic of rape.

The reason that we feel it is important to reach out to you regarding this show is to make you aware of its content and to encourage you to engage in conversation with your child about this show if you learn that they are watching it. The show could be troubling to some students and we want to make sure that they have an opportunity to process these mature themes in a healthy way. Even though there are other shows, movies, and books that discuss suicide, the emphasis that this show puts on using suicide as a method of revenge is what is particularly alarming to the mental health community.

Prior to having a discussion with your child, you may wish review these helpful articles that provide talking points about the show.

Also, feel free to talk to us if you have any specific concerns or if you would like assistance in talking to your child about the show. Our contact numbers are provided below.

Thank you,

Important Changes to the SAT Test

The College Board has announced a few changes for international test takers. Some of these changes might affect you so please read below.

Why did the June SAT get cancelled?

The College Board had previously announced that it would be reducing the number of international test dates in the near future as an effort to reduce the number of cheating incidents that have been occurring at international test centers. The June SAT cancellation was the first test date to be cut.

When will the SAT be offered in 2017 for international students

For 2017, there is no March SAT for international students. The remaining test dates for 2017 are May, October and December. The June SAT has been cancelled.

When will the SAT be offered in 2018 for international students?

From 2018 onwards, the SAT will be offered 4 times a year for international students. Students can expect to see test dates in March, May, October & December. In speaking with various international schools around the world, it appears that of these four test dates, October will be the most popular. If your students plan to take the October SAT internationally, make sure they register early before test centers fill up.

What should students do if they were planning on taking the June SAT?

Option 1: Take the May SAT instead, as long as they register by April 7th. This date might not work for them if they have final exams around that time. It also reduces the amount of time they have to prepare by one month. However, it leaves October & December as back up options in case they don’t do as well as they hoped.

Option 2: Take the October SAT instead. This date will give them more time to prepare. However remember that October will be very busy with college applications and keeping up with school grades and extracurricular activities. They will also be left with only December as a back up test date incase they don’t do as well. This won’t work if they’re applying early decision to schools, however many universities will accept December scores. Make sure they check with the universities they’re interested in before picking December as a test date.

Additional Tips & Suggestions:

Consider the ACT: The ACT is equally accepted by all US universities. The test is offered internationally 5 times a year (September, October, December, April & June). If these test dates work well for t, it might be worth registering for the ACT as well. Want to know if your students are well suited for the ACT? Click here to access a 2-minute free self-assessment

Take SAT Subject Tests in June: If they were already planning on taking a test in June, and the universities they’re applying to require SAT subject tests, use the June test date to take a subject test instead, since the June SAT Subject tests haven’t been cancelled!

GIS offers summer university tours to help high school students be better informed and more knowledgeable about where and what to study and hopefully help them narrow down their choices.  Check out this 1 minute video where they quickly go through one of the tours from A to Z: https://youtu.be/hvinSsbzLSI

The tours are directed to all of those students looking to apply to top-ranked unis in North America and in the United Kingdom with the following feelings towards accessing uni!

  • Excited students, super eager to find the right university but not yet decided.
  • Students planning to go to a good university but feeling a bit lost, in need of inspiration and first-hand information to give them a little push of direction.
  • Focused students that know very well what they want but perhaps you find advisable for them to have a look at what other good unis offer.
  • Doubtful students that need to see with their own eyes what the universities look like.

Over summer break, GIS groups international high school students from different schools and countries all over the globe into a full one-week of university visits.  You can check the detailed itineraries here:  www.gisuniversitytours.com. Most of the tours are in the month of July and group size is between 10 to 20 students’ maximum.

Alumni Spotlights

Last month we invited alumni to come back and share their experiences at university with our Grade 12 students. Please take the time to listen to their important advice on life after UAS.

“How To Get U.S. Scholarships Through Athletics” With Team Rhino Sports

UAS Athletics have the pleasure of inviting Carlos Algarin, from Team Rhino Sports, to present information on U.S University Athletic Scholarships and Recruiting. Mr. Algarin will be at UAS on Tuesday, November 8th @ 6pm in the Secondary Library. He will provide information to all interested Grade 9-12 athletes and parents about “How to Get U.S Scholarships through Athletics”. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about what it takes to use your athletic talent to help you succeed in getting a great university experience.

TR Sports has a deep and intimate understanding of the college athlete recruiting process and is dedicated to helping their clients become more knowledgeable of college recruiting efforts, develop customer-specific recruiting strategies and ensure that the recruiting process is enjoyable for both the recruit and their family via our partner Factory Athletics. If you are an international student-athlete looking to play a sport(s) on a scholarship at a U.S. university, their Student-Athlete College Services program can match you to an institution that will fulfill you athletically, academically, and personally.
