The elementary staff participated in wonderful professional development last week.  The focus was small group teaching strategies and analyzing student data to plan lessons based on students’ needs.  It is critical to understand the importance of  data to drive instruction.  One research study polled parents and teachers to gain an understanding of their knowledge of student data.  You can read more here.  We will be discussing how data drives instruction at our next Parent Coffee on November 8th at 8AM.

Thank you to those parents that attended our first parent coffee last week.  We had an amazing time learning about parents’ wishes for their children and getting parent feedback on changes they would like to see in the elementary division.  We also played a game of “Duck, Duck, Goose” and learned how it is used as a great assessment tool in the early years program.  We also received feedback from parents regarding curriculum guides that are being produced to help inform what students are learning in the classroom.  I greatly appreciate all the feedback we received and I appreciate the time parents took to be learn about what their children are learning at UAS!

I usually post on Saturday evenings but last night I was on my way back from an amazing IB conference.  I am filled with excitement about the growth of our PYP program. Through its inquiry-led, transdisciplinary framework, the PYP challenges students to think for themselves and take responsibility for their learning as they explore local and global issues and opportunities in real-life contexts.  At UAS, we have laid a solid foundation within our PYP program but I think we can make it even better.  Also, the IB organization has revised the program and will be rolling out the Enhanced PYP next semester.  I will be meeting with our PYP committee in the next few weeks to discuss how we can make our program more enriching with a focus on personalized learning and real life application.
