Today our amazing counselors brought together their monthly Lunch Bunch. This month we recognized students who were nominated for showcasing the PYP Communicator Learner Profile trait!
Communicators, as defined by IB, understand and express ideas and information confidently and creatively in more than one language and in a variety of modes of communication. They work effectively and willingly in collaboration with others. (IB Learner Profile Booklet, 2009)
Here are some activities to help promote and support the Learner Profile of Communicator with your child:
Encourage your child to stay in touch with relatives and friends who live in other countries, states, and cities by writing letters, using the phone, or sending email.
When working on math homework, encourage your child to explain his answers to you orally and/or by drawing a picture.
Ask your child thought provoking questions and encourage your child to discuss them with you. For example: “Should you do chores around the house? Why or why not?”
Help your child improve their listening skills. Being a good listener is an important part of communicating with others. I like to use the old adage that we are born with two ears and one mouth – let’s practice actively listening twice as much as we talk!
Catch your child being a communicator. Make sure your child knows they have done something good. Expressing your approval through praise is a powerful way to reinforce the Learner Profile of Communicator.
Thank you to the Counselors for organizing the Lunch Bunch, to the kids for being such great communicators and to St. Helena Unified School District for contributing to the Parent Pointers!
Mr. Andrew Torris hosted the Spring Director’s Forum in the Secondary Library today for the parents of UAS. Mr. Torris shared important information about the direction of the school, the Leadership of the school and the re-organization of the secondary school into two distinct divisions. Mr. Patrick Hould followed Mr. Torris’ discussion with important information about the induction of the new middle school division at UAS next school year.
While the slides do not completely share the full amount of information conveyed to parents during the 90 minute presentation, nor the fruitfulness of the question and answer time afterwards, they will give you an idea of what was discussed at the Forum.
This is a condensed version of the presentation that contains only the schoolwide and middle school Powerpoints. We know that our Elementary community is most interested in the schoolwide direction as well as the new middle school program in which our elementary students will eventually be moving into over the next few years.
As always, we invite you to come to school to be part of the conversations about OUR community!
Our very own UAS PTO and Support Staff Welfare Committee organized a spectacular Support Staff Appreciation Picnic at Mamzar Beach Park over the weekend. This was a small way that parents, teachers, administrators and students could say thank you to our support staff for making our school a better place. Our students are safe, happy, and learning individuals who benefit from our Support Staff every day. Thank you to all of those who were able to join us for the picnic! If you missed us, please enjoy the highlights AND join us next time as we pause to appreciate our team!
The Elementary school is running a Session 3 ASA program commencing on May 3. The sessions are held Monday – Thursday 3:15pm – 4:15pm.
Spaces are limited in each activity and will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. Registration is now open and will remain open through the first part of the week. Please promptly complete ASA signup forms for each of your Elementary children by following the link to the Signup Form on the Parent Portal Page.
Please keep in mind that families will need to arrange transportation home for their children as there are no ASA busses for this final session.
Thank you for your continued support of the UAS ASA programs.
