Readers become better readers by reading! First grade is a time when readers go from very little print and little story to a whole lot of print and great stories/characters. The year is broken up into units of study. Reading workshop is where the children learn what it is that strong readers do.
The workshop routine:
Children are shown one reading strategy or practice and are encouraged to use the strategy in their own reading.
Independent reading time
Children are engaged in reading books at their independent reading level. The teacher works with students on their instructional reading level: pulling small groups, teaching reading strategies, and conferring with individual readers.
Partner reading time
Children read together, point out favorite parts, talk about their reading, and practice reading strategies.
End Workshop Share
Children come together to reflect on the workshop and recap the strategy learned that day.
