Welcome to the the KG2TD blog for Universal American School. My name is Tolu Daramola and it was a pleasure to meet many of you this past week during orientation.
This blog is used to communicate what type of learning we are doing in the class, upcoming events, and strategies for developing well-balanced students.

What have we been doing in January?
- In Math students studied 2d and 3d shapes. We looked to see what 3d shapes could roll, slide, and stack. We compared shapes using their attributes as well as whether they were congruent or similar. Finally, we made 2d Monsters, and 3d Art Pieces. Beginning On Sunday, January 28th, stop by the classroom to see our 2d/3d Shape Exhibit titled, “Shape Monster University.”
- In Reading students have practiced the digraphs, ch/wh/th/sh. Students have also worked on their short vowels A,E, and I books. We have reviewed sight words and have turned words we see often into Snap Words. Students Read Every Day and have an opportunity to read to a partner, a teacher, or to the class. Students took home a Sight Word Assessment where we tested their sight word skills. Feel free to make sight word cards for the students to practice the words they do not know at home with. The school has added the language portion of IXL to access at home. Please try it out!
- In Writing students have continued writing pattern pieces. We have written about what Community Helpers can do, have, and who they help. Students have been intentional about putting spaces in between each word, writing capital letters at the beginning of sentences, periods at the end of sentences, and labelling their pictures. Students edit their work by reading it to a friend and getting feedback on whether it is easy to read or not.
- Throughout the curriculum, we have explored various community helpers and their functions. We have made healthy and unhealthy signs that takes the students own snack and lunch and discuss the health benefits! The final project students are working at is at home with you. A presentation describing the community helper of their choice. Each students took a book walk exploring various community helpers. Now, students get to do further research on the community helper of their choice. Students will present their Community Helpers on February 4th, 2018. You can draw, print out pictures, cut out magazines, or even paint! There is no right or wrong way to fill out the paper. Students will have 1 minute for their presentations.
It has been an exciting January. I am looking forward to seeing the students grow and develop a deeper understanding of their foundational skills in order for them to be successful in the future!
Here is the link to the ‘3 stars and 2 wishes’ form which was mentioned on the calendar. This form will only take a couple of minutes to complete and helps inform us for our parent teacher conferences. Please complete by the 8th of November.
Please note that you will be able to sign up for a PTC time slot tomorrow, following the instructions which were sent to you by school admin.
