February and March Learning Expectations
Congratulations! We have made it to the middle of the KG2 school year. Here are details regarding what we are focusing on for the next few weeks.
Math- In math we are transitioning from Date and Measurement to Addition and Subtraction. Students should have a strong foundation in counting objects and writing numbers. We will begin our focus on problem solving using fingers, pictures, and songs. For those kids who are ready, we will extend into number stories, and sentences.
Please – Sign in to IXL Math to help review these skills.
Reading- In Reading we are transiting from learning about super powers to reading books using our superpowers. In our new books, we have new words, longer words, challenging sentences, and surprise endings. For those kids who are ready, we are asking comprehension questions, asking about story elements, and requesting students retell the story to us.
Please- Read to your child and let them read independently EVERY NIGHT.
Writing- We have transitioned from basic pattern writing, to story telling about moments in our day. Students are first asked to come up with a list of ideas to possibly write about it. We are using checklist to see if our writing is complete, we are asking friends to read our writing, and using pattern sentences to help writing our stories. We are also encouraging students to include sight words and CVC words from their short word family books in their sentences. For those who are ready we are looking for sentences with transition words, speech bubbles, and various punctuation used appropriately.
Please- Practice sight words with kids, try saying the word, having them write the word, and spelling it correctly. They can also tell you sentences with the words in them.
Handwriting- Students will begin to learn about the proper formation in handwriting, Tall letter, short letters, and falling letters. We will also write to 100 and correct and number reversals or wrong number formation.
Please- Practice writing their names, numbers, and anything. Correct them when you notice wrong formation.
In UOI We can describe our environment. We can explore like a scientist does. We can explore the environment around us. We can tell apart living and non-living things. Students began the unit studying weather patterns at school, we then created wind chimes, and finally made predictions about the weather. We now are moving on to describe the environment we live in, and comparing it to other habitats in the world. We will compare the rainforest, ocean, savannah and desert habitat with online explorations, videos, books, and creating posters and writing pieces.
Please- Ask kids about what they see around them, how our field trips went, and what things they are curious about learning.
This is just a brief over of everything we are planning to do! I hope this helps you with working with your kids at home.
