holiday work

Good afternoon,

I will not be sending any “homework” home for the holidays. It is an important time to be with family, relax and be a kid!

However, with that said, it is a long time to go without any work. Please continue to read, write and count with your child.  They should know all 26 letter sounds and names. They should be able to start writing and reading 3 letter words and rhyming words such as hat, cat, bat… Many children are writing longer words using their own spelling. They should be able to count to at least 50 and start to count by 10’s to 100. Please continue to read their poem notebook, pointing out their sight words.

I have sent a sheet of our handwriting paper in their folders today. You may photocopy this, or scan and print it so that you will practice on the same lines that we use in the classroom. They should be able to write the first letter capital and all of the other letters lowercase with proper formation, including, small, tall and hanging letters.  They should begin to have a space between words. Please encourage them to write by themselves, “chopping” up the sounds using their sound power, try not to spell for them. I am thrilled with seeing their own spelling.  Maybe you could staple several pages together and they could write a little journal of what they did over the holiday. If they do any writing or other work over the holiday I will be happy to see it when they get back!!

Thank you to all of you that have volunteered supplies or your time to help tomorrow.

Have a safe, happy holiday.

Lois

What’s up next week?

Next week is another busy week in Kindergarten.

Sunday, Dec. 11th: No school

Monday, Dec. 12th: Pajama Day and visit to Santa (shhh!)

Tuesday, Dec. 13th: Regular day with lots of fun activities.

Wednesday, Dec. 14th: Party Activities 9:30-11:00, decorating and eating cookies 2:15-3:00.

Thursday, Dec. 15th, Regular Day dismissal at 12:00.

We will resume school on Monday, January 2, 2017!

On Pajama Day, please do what your child is most comfortable with. If they don’t want to wear their pajamas, it’s ok. They can just wear anything they want. If they want to bring them in a bag and change when they get here or bring other clothes in case they want to change later that is okay. This is a fun day for many but some children are not comfortable with this and that is fine. You can tell them Mrs. Finney will be wearing her pajamas!!

If you would prefer that your child not visit Santa or not have his/her picture taken with him that is perfectly fine. Just let me know and we will make sure to respect your wishes.

I will be sending a google doc out by email asking for donations of a few items or your time for our activities on Wednesday. If you are able to send something in or volunteer to help please put your name on the list next to the appropriate item. We will be doing activities in the morning and cookie decorating and eating in the afternoon.

On Wednesday, Dec. 15th I will not be at school. I am going to sneak out early in order to make it home to the States to see my son graduate from university. YEAH! Ms. Naomi will be the teacher that day.

I wish you all a wonderful, safe holiday and look forward to coming back in January ready for a big chunk of time to continue the great learning that is happening in our room.

Thank you for all your help and support,

Lois

Sight words

Good morning,

It appears that some of the sight word flashcards got mixed up when they were sent home. Some of you got words from both unit 1 and unit 2 at the same time. I am sorry about the mix up.

These words are the first words that appear in our reading books. It is important for your child to be able to recognise these words, it doesn’t matter what order they are in.  Please work on all 10 words and I will retest the children before the holiday.

Unit 1  I, a, am, go, like                Unit 2   at, in, the, is, look

If your child knows all of these words by sight they can practice writing and spelling them as they should be able to use them in their writing. We also have them on our sight word chart for them to use.

6 of you received a sight word packet. This is just another way for them to be practicing their words written in different ways. They should work on this slowly, carefully and neatly and bring it back before the holiday, December 14th.

I apologize for all of the confusion and will make sure Unit 3 is done correctly.

Thank you for your understanding,

Lois
