Swimming Starts Tomorrow!

Greetings Parents,

The day has finally arrived! Our class will have their first swimming lesson TOMORROW.  Please send your child to school wearing their swimsuit under their UAS uniform. Please review the swimming guidelines below.

Swimming Guidelines:

Our first day of swimming will be TUESDAY, May 1st  from 10:15-10:45am and we will swim EVERY TUESDAY at this time.

Please have your child wear their swim suit to school so we have more time to get things done before swimming. It will be necessary to have them wear only 2 piece suits for easy toileting. Please do not have your child wear a 1-piece body suit or girl’s 1 piece swim suit. They must bring a swim cap. They are available for purchase in the school uniform shop but they can wear any kind.

They can wear their uniform or just any t-shirt and shorts over their suits on the day of swimming. They should also wear sandals, flip flops or crocs for the day as well. Please bring a separate waterproof bag with a towel, swim cap and underwear, to change into after swimming.

The pool is only a few feet deep and they will be closely supervised, so it is not necessary to send in water wings or floating toys.

It is in a covered area but we may do water activities beforehand outside, so please apply sunscreen before they come to school.

Please read and discuss the following rules with your child.

  • Walking feet only-No running
  • Use an inside voice (table talk)
  • Wear swimming caps
  • Sit and slip into pool
  • Gentle play only

They must listen and follow the rules during swim time to participate.

If you have questions,  please email me at ldornan@uasdubai.ae

Thank you!

Straw Pledge

Greetings Parents,

Please read the following message from a grade 5 exhibition group regarding the use of plastic straws at school. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Ms. Lisa

Dear parents of lower elementary,

We are fifth graders, Viola, Emma, Krishna, Daniel. We are currently working on our grade five exhibition. Our topic is water pollution. For our action, our group is doing a straw pledge, which is encouraging students not to use straws for a whole week. We our doing this as our action because plastic straws mainly end up in the ocean and animals will eat it, instead paper straws will decompose quicker so that the fish won’t eat it. Plastic takes thousands of years to decompose while paper straws will take a couple of weeks. Since the pre-k to kg-2 don’t buy from the cafeteria and they eat their own snacks in the classrooms, we would like you to get involved. We ask you parents if you could not let the kids bring juice pouches or juice which has a straw attached to it, since that is one of the ways to do our straw pledge. If your kid still brings a juice pouch, then we will provide them with natural paper straw which is a better alternative than plastic straws. Since most of the plastic ends up being thrown in the ocean and takes 1000 years to disintegrate, however paper straws will take only a couple of weeks to disintegrate.

Thank you for reading and taking part in our straw pledge.

Our Week

Our Week:

It was a short and busy week preparing for student-led conferences.  We continued to learn about animals that live in the ocean. This week the children made rainbow fish as well as octopuses. We continued to read stories from the rainbow fish series. We have also been reading some non-fiction books about ocean wildlife. The children have enjoyed learning about water animals. Next week we will continue to learn about animals that live in the ocean.

To focus on our color of the month, purple, we read Harold and the Purple Crayon. After reading the story, the children made their own purple drawings using purple crayons, markers, and construction paper. Come look at our bulletin boards outside the classroom to see our work.

Looking Ahead:

Jackson Pollack Day- April 29th: Our artist of the month is Jackson Pollack. We will be completing a messy project inspired by Pollack’s work, so please have your child come to school dressed in old clothing that can get dirty.

Purple Day- April 30th: Purple day is Monday, April 30th. Your child may come to school dressed in purple or bring a purple item for show & tell.

Swimming Starts- May 1st: We will start swimming Tuesday, May 1st and swim every Tuesday until the end of the school year.  Please review the swimming guidelines and rules below and email me if you have any questions.

Hag Al Laila Parade– May 1st: The parade will be at 8:15-8:40 (we are not participating in the parade but if you would like to come and watch you are most welcome). It is also a dress down day in celebration of the holiday. Please remember that we start swimming on May 1st so please have your child come to school in their swimsuit under their dress down clothing.

Dolphinarium Field Trip-May 10th: We will take a field trip to the Dolphinarium on Thursday, May 10th.  We will be sending home a permission slip soon and more details will be posted on the blog in the coming week.

No School- May 13th: There is no school on Sunday, May 13th.

End of the Year Celebration- May 15th: We will have our end of year celebration in the morning on May 15th. Both preK classes will come together from 8:15-9:15am to acknowledge the children, perform some songs and eat some food together. We need your help with bringing in some breakfast themed food such as eggs, fruit, veggies, croissants, sausages-please NO food with pork or nuts. Once the performance is over the children and parents will get an opportunity to eat and socialize in this really fun atmosphere.

Ramadan & The End of the School Year: The month of Ramadan is quickly approaching.  The predicted dates for Eid-al-Fitr on our UAS calendar are June 14-16; however please note that the exact dates will officially be announced by KHDA. Pre-K and KG1’s last day of school for the school year is Thursday, June 21st.  It is a regular day ending at 12:45.

Our Week

Our Week:

This week we continued to work on our new unit of inquiry about water by looking at different sources of and uses for water. We read the book What Shapes the Earth: Water.  We then discussed the different uses of water.  We also read The Flying Bath, which highlights the importance and uses of water. During free inquiry we made rain and wind process art projects.  The children used paint and water droppers to make it rain on their paper.  They then used straws to blow wind on the paper. In addition to discussing the uses of water, we started to talk about animals that live in the water. This week we read both The Rainbow Fish and Rainbow Fish and the Big Blue Whale. We then created underwater scenes using water colors and oil pastels.

We also started a water experiment this week. I showed the students some water beads, which look like very small plastic beads. I then asked the children what they thought would happen if I put the beads in water. Some of the children guessed they would change shape or change into something else. We then put the beads in water and we will watch what happens over the next few days.

Sunday we also celebrated Noor and Yousef’s 4th birthday!  Happy Birthday Noor & Yousef!

Wednesday we had a Tasty Treat from Dr. Amna, the school doctor, and Ms. Daramola, KG2 teacher. The tasty treat was homemade hummus with sliced cucumber and carrots. Most of the children tried and enjoyed the hummus. We sent home a copy of the recipe if you would like to make the hummus at home.

I will be away from April 19th until the 23rd  attending a professional development.  I will be back in school on April 24th.  I will be reachable via email if you have any questions or concerns.
