Posh Paws!

We had a great visit with Posh Paws today.  The children got to pet and feed several different animals.  Please check out our pictures below and our Flickr page for more pictures from today!

A Few Notes

Greetings Parents!  Just a few reminders from PreK.

Blue Day– Tomorrow is Blue Day.  Please send your child to school wearing blue or have them bring something blue for Show & Tell.

Extra Clothes– Please keep an extra set of clothes in your child’s cubby.  We noticed that many children no longer have a set of clothes.  Please check and make sure your child has extra clothes at school.

Snack– Please remember to pack only healthy foods for snack time.  Items like fruits, vegetables, cheese, and sandwiches will give your child energy they need for the day.  Items like crackers, cereal, chocolate, candy, and nuts are not allowed.

Thank you for your cooperation!

Ms. Lisa

Our Week

Our Week:

Our week started with our first Open Inquiry morning with all of PreK and KG1.  The children moved between classrooms at their own pace.  The children got to explore new classrooms and meet new peers.

This week we are finishing up our unit on homes.  This week we talked about different types of homes.  We read the books The Napping House, A House is a House for Me, and Come Home with Us.  We also completed an art project during which the children made houses out of brown paper bags.

Thursday we had Outdoor Centers.  This week’s centers were an obstacle course, musical instruments, basketball, and the playground.  The children are really enjoying spending more time outside and trying a variety of new activities.

Looking Ahead:

Next week we will start our new unit of inquiry, feelings.  During this unit, we will focus on identifying our feelings and how we express our feelings.

Remember to have your child wear their RED shirt on Sunday for Open Inquiry.

Our animal friends from Posh Paws will be visiting on Tuesday January 30th.

Blue day will be on Wednesday January 31st.  Have your child wear blue or bring in something blue for show & tell.

PreK and KG1 Sports Day will be February 8th.  Please have your child wear their RED shirt on the 8th.  More details will be posted in the coming weeks.

House Keeping:

This week we noticed that several children were very sleepy at school.  Please remember to put your child to bed at a reasonable hour.  Your children work very hard at school and need lots of rest so they can grow and learn.  Thank you for your cooperation.

***Important*** Student dress code at UAS was mentioned in the elementary blog earlier this week. Please make sure your child is wearing the UAS school uniform to school (T-shirt, Jacket, shorts, trousers etc). We are noticing many children wearing non UAS uniform clothing. In the Early Years we are happy for children to be wearing plain navy bottoms if need be due to uniform sizing.

Have a great weekend!

Our Week

Our Week:

This week we focused on our unit of inquiry, homes.  We read the story The Three Little Pigs and discussed the three types of homes that were in the story.  We also focused on story features, including the identifying the characters.  The children also had the opportunity to retell and sequence the story using a story board.  In addition to reading and retelling the story, the children made three houses, a straw house, a stick house, and a brick house.  The children then identified their favorite part of the story.  It was a fun week reading and retelling a classic story.

We also started discussing our own homes.  On Thursday, we talked about the who lives in our homes.  The children then created individual graphs that showed who lives in their home.  Check out our hallway bulletin board outside our classroom to see our work.

This week we also started a new activity, Outdoor Centers.  Outdoor Centers focus on developing skills outside the classroom.  These skills include gross and fine motor skills, cooperation, and problem solving.  This week our Outdoor Centers were an obstacle course, sand construction, bowling, and painting with water.  See the pictures below and on Flickr to see our work during Outdoor Centers.

We also celebrated Celine’s 4th birthday on Wednesday and my birthday on Thursday.  A big thank you to all the parents that contributed to the surprise celebration for me on Thursday.  I truly enjoy my work with your children and the surprise made me feel very appreciated.  THANK YOU!

Looking ahead:

On January 21st, we will be starting an activity with PreK and KG1 called Open Inquiry.  During Open Inquiry, we will open up the PreK and KG1 classrooms and the children will move and explore between classrooms in a free flow manner.  Open Inquiry gives the children the opportunity to interact with new peers, explore different materials, and get to know all the PreK and KG1 teachers.  It also helps prepare the PreK students for the transition to KG1 as they will become familiar with the teachers and classrooms in KG1.  Since we will be working with all of PreK and KG1, it is very important for your child to wear their PreK UAS red shirt every Sunday, starting January 21st.

Our animal friends from Posh Paws Animals will be coming to UAS. The date is to be determined and more information will be posted next week.

Blue Day will be January 31st.  Please send your child to school wearing blue or have them bring something blue for show & tell.

Happy New Year!

Our Week:

Happy New Year from Ms. Lisa and Ms. Themla’s class!  We hope you had a wonderful and restful holiday break.  We had a great first week back together.  This week we continued working on our unit of inquiry, homes.  Before the break, we focused on animal homes.  This week we looked at how two different insects live, bees and butterflies.  We took a look inside bee hives by reading the non-fiction book Look Inside a Bee Hive.  The children then made their own bee hives.  To learn about butterflies, we revisited The Very Hungry Caterpillar.  To compliment the story, we have been focusing on the butterfly life cycle.  To understand the process, the children made their own caterpillars which we will place in cocoons.  After a week, the caterpillars will emerge from the cocoons as butterflies.

We have also focused on our monthly concepts.  The color of the month is blue and the shape of the month is a rectangle.  We have been focusing on the number five during morning circle as well as the nursery rhyme Little Boy Blue.

In addition to these monthly concepts, we are have started more literacy and numeracy concepts.  So far this year, the children have been learning to recognize their own name as well as their friends’ names.  Starting in January, we will be focusing on learning the letters in their names.  We will learn to recognize letters and focus on letter formation as well.  In math, we are also working on counting with one-to-one correspondence and recognizing the quantity of a given numeral for numbers 1 to 10.

Looking Ahead:

We have many exciting activities coming up in preK.  Starting next Thursday, the 18th, we will be having outdoor learning centers.  There will be four activities in the early childhood playground and each child will participate in all activity.  Outdoor learning centers will take place one a week on Thursdays.

Please continue to have your child practice taking off and putting on their socks and shoes independently.  They need to be able to demonstrate this skill to enjoy the outdoor sensory area.  Additionally, swimming will take place this spring.  The children will need to be able to get changed and dressed independently for swimming.  Please start having your child practice this skill now so they are ready for swimming in the spring.

Have a great weekend!
