Our Week

Our Week:

It’s hard to believe that it is already November.  We enjoyed a short week here in PreK.  Tuesday was orange day in Pre-K.  In addition to orange day, this week we focused on learning the primary colors and mixing colors to make secondary colors.  We read two colorful stories about mixing colors, Mix It Up by Herve Tullet and Mouse Paint by Ellen Stoll Walsh.  We also read another story by Herve Tullet called Press Here.

We conducted two experiments to learn how to mix colors and make secondary colors.  In the first experiment, we used food coloring and water.  The children used eyedroppers to mix the different colored water.  Before mixing the colors, we also made predictions and then observed the results.  In our second experiment, we used paint and q-tips to mix and make different colors.

For the month of November, we will focus on the nursery rhyme the Incey Wincey Spider.  The color of the month is yellow and the shape of the month is a triangle.  We will work on these concepts this coming month.  We will also focus on the artist of the month, Vincent Van Gogh.

Looking Ahead:

Next week we will start our second unit of inquiry.  The title of our unit is Where We Are in Place and Time: Homes.  We will explore animal homes and human homes as well as why we have homes and similarities/differences in types of homes.  Please check out the unit of inquiry page for more information on our unit.

On November 13th, we will be watching the play Jack and the Beanstalk.  We will also read the story in class to become more familiar with the story.

November 15th and 16th are Parent-Teacher conference days.  There is no school for students on these two days.  More information about conferences will be posted soon.

School pictures will be on November 22nd and 23rd.  More information regarding picture days will be posted soon.

Yellow day will be on Monday, November 27th.

Today we sent home a flyer about Caring Boxes.  In connection with our PYP Who We Are unit, and to show how being a caring member of a community is important, the Pre-K, KG1 and KG2 teams have collaborated on an effort we are calling the Caring Box.  The children will be organizing, decorating and filling boxes of a variety of items, to give to our UAS Support Staff members. This will include our bus drivers, bus monitors, cleaners, maintenance, security and a few others. This is where we need your help. We are asking that each student bring in particular items so that we may fill the boxes.  We are hoping to fill eight boxes per classroom. We would like your child to go shopping with you to get the items listed on the flyer sent home today.  Please send in these items by November 14th.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you and have a lovely weekend!

Ms. Lisa
