November 16, 2017…

Thank you parents for attending our Parent Teacher Conferences! It was great seeing you and sharing with you about how your child is doing in KG1 so far this year. Please use the light green handout we gave you to practice and review with your child at home. Let them show you how much they are learning this year! You will receive report cards in December.

Monday, November 20, we would like for each child to bring in either a UAE magazine or UAE/area newspaper. We are using these for a class project and will be cutting out pictures and/or words from UAE and/or Dubai.
If you plan to purchase books from the Scholastic Book Order Form, please send in the order with the exact cash on Tuesday, November 21. Reading with your child is a great way for you to build literacy skills and spend quality time together.
We will have our CLASS AND INDIVIDUAL PHOTOS taken next THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 23. Please make sure your child wears their UAS polo/collared style shirt and either shorts, pants or skirt.
Your child’s big, black portfolio that was shared with you during conferences, should be returned by Monday, December 4. Make sure you sit down and go through this special book together!  They are very proud to show you their work and progress!
We will be celebrating UAE National Day with a variety of activities during the week of November 26-29. We need a few parents to assist with taking students around to the exhibits on Wednesday, November 29. There is no school on Thursday, November 30. November 9, 2017…

Dear Parents, these next few weeks are super busy. Please read everything and let me know if
you have any questions! Thanks for supporting your child's educational experiences!
Today we went on our first KG1 field trip to Little Explorers. The children enjoyed exploring the five zones – I Discover Myself, I Locate Myself, I Can Do, I Experiment and All Together.  They also enjoyed a workshop titled “Rhythm and Sound”. We had a truly special and fun-filled day and I was happy with how well my students listened, despite a very busy place today. Pics will be added to flickr soon!
Literature Bags!!! They came home this week for the first time and the students were VERY excited about them. Some like to call it their “homework”! We encourage you to do the activities each night, again and again! Please return ALL items inside the bag each and every Sunday.
McGrudy’s Book Fair is coming to school next Sunday-Thursday. A small envelope came home yesterday with your child, but you do not need to return it. In KG1, we walk the kids over for a preview, but no shopping. We would rather you come shop with your child and select items yourself. The Book Fair is open each day next week, from 8:00-4:30. You can also shop on your own before or after your Parent Conference next week!
Next Monday, November 13, we will be treated to a Jack and the Beanstalk play by the Lollipop Theatre, in our MPH. We will go promptly after 8:00, so please don’t be late for school. In the event you arrive late, please bring your child to find us in the MPH. Also, please make sure they use the toilet before coming to school.
Next Tuesday, November 14, we would like to have ALL items (Shampoo, lotion, razors, etc) that we requested for our UAS Support Staff Caring Boxes, turned in. We will be preparing the boxes to give to our wonderful Support Staff. We want the students to be able to place the items they bring into each box, so PLEASE let me know if you forgot what your child needs to bring. We want all of them to participate!
Next Tuesday, November 14, UAS is taking time to acknowledge Diabetes Awareness Month. It is estimated that 1 million people in the UAE suffer from this disease. Please have your child WEAR BLUE as a reminder to stay healthy and try to avoid this life threatening disease.
Next Wednesday, November 15 and Thursday, November 16, there is NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS. These two days are set aside for teachers and parents (no students) to meet and discuss how things are going so far this school year. You have been given lots of information regarding the survey, how to sign up online, sibling schedules and so forth. Please email me asap if you still have questions. If you are having technical issues, please contact Conferences are scheduled for 25 minutes each, which allows plenty of time to chat. I look forward to seeing each of you next week!
Update on what we’ve been doing in the classroom too… We have began our new PYP unit, How the World Works, which focuses on how we use our 5 Senses to discover things. We have been investigating and exploring with magnifying glasses, kaleidoscopes, magnets, different textures and so many more cool things. Our field trip today fit in nicely with E-X-P-L-O-R-I-N-G! Ask your child what investigate or explore means 🙂
Our literacy focus has been on letters Ee and Ff, learning to identify the letters and the sounds. We are learning words that begin with that sound, and using our Handwriting Without Tears curriculum, we are writing those letters very nicely. Students are gaining a phonemic awareness of the difference between letters and words, as we count letters in different words each day. Which word is shorter/longer? Which word has 5 letters? Which word begins with an /e/ or /f/ sound? Which word is first or last? THESE ARE GREAT QUESTIONS YOU CAN ASK THEM AT HOME AS YOU READ BOOKS TOGETHER TOO!
In Math, we are continuing to count 0-10, recognize numbers 0-10, sort and make patterns in a variety of ways. Each morning on the learning carpet or during calendar time, we sing the Number Rock song, and add to our calendar. We continue to learn the Days of the Week and Months of the Year as well as count how many days we have been in KG1. We do a variety of things during calendar time and I am so proud at how much they are learning during this part of our day!

November 2, 2017…

As you noticed on our November calendar, this is a VERY busy month.
We celebrated UAE Flag Day today and there will be photos added to my Flickr account over the weekend. We looked great in our Green shirts and did a great job walking down to the field for the school photo! Mrs. Beam’s heart was very happy.
We had a really great week this week…
A special thanks to Jude’s, Leo’s, Nora’s and Nadine’s moms for coming to run our Halloween Centers on Tuesday. We had a SPOOK-tacular time!
Ms. Gen was out sick on Wednesday, but my class did an amazing job in her absence. Our substitute was very impressed with how Principled and Caring we all were!
Today we celebrated UAE Flag Day and discussed where we live. Talk to your child and look for flags around Dubai, as you are out and about over the weekend!
Thank you for returning permission slips and money for your child to join us next Thursday, November 9, for the Little Explorers field trip. Here are some reminders for that day:
  • Your child should wear their BLUE class tshirt with uniform shorts and school sneakers.
  • They should also bring a DISPOSABLE water bottle, labeled with their name.
  • They should bring their regular snack, folder and backpack as well.
  • Parents that are being asked to attend will be notified via email, no later than Sunday.
Next week your child will bring home their first Literature Bag (if you signed the permission form) . These bags are filled with a book and fun activities for you and your child to do together. Please help your child learn responsibility, and keep everything inside the bag while it is at home. If any item is missing from the bag, you are responsible for replacing or your child may not receive one again. These are GREAT learning opportunities and bags are due back every Sunday!
In your child’s folder today, there is an important letter explaining our Early Years Caring Box initiative. Please read carefully and let us know if you have questions. We would like all items turned in no later than Nov. 14.
On Sunday, we will email you a link to a Google survey to complete regarding Parent Teacher Conferences. The 3 minute survey will need to be completed before November 8th.
Parent Conferences will be on November 15 and 16. Ms. Janel schedules all elementary siblings, so that the times are back to back. These times are not easy to change, because it affects more than one teacher. If you have more than one child in PK-Grade 5, your time is already booked, and you will be notified soon. All others will be notified from UAS, regarding this year’s online booking system, and directions on how to book. Conferences take place from 8-4 with 25 minute scheduled meetings with lunch/break for teachers. There will be no school for students on these 2 days.
If you have questions regarding any information on today’s blog, please send me an email… we are busy bees😊 Mrs. Beam

October 31, 2017…

Dear Parents… Hopefully you have had time to read over the November Calendar that came home in the folders today.

In case you haven’t, this is to remind you that your child needs to wear a GREEN shirt this Thursday, November 2. This is to celebrate UAE Flag Day and take a whole school photo. They can wear the shirt for the whole day and there is no need to change.

Please do not be late to school on Thursday. The photo will be taken soon after we arrive, so we will be walking to the field at 7:55. We will NOT come inside first, so if you are late, just bring your child out to the field and look for me! Please be mindful that the WHOLE school will be out there!

Thanks so much for your support!!!

October 26, 2017…

HALLOWEEN was in the air today as we celebrated with amazing costumes, a parade and Trick or Treating! I was very HAPPY with my class today! They did a great job being so principled, despite a busy, busy day AND I received compliments of their great manners when they visited the other classrooms for trick or treating 🙂 Your child should have brought home a treat bag with lots of fun toys and candies today. We asked them not to eat any candy until they returned home. Thanks for sending in treats to make our event so much fun!

THIS WEEK WE…  did all sorts of fun Halloween centers and activities. We create AB patterns with pumpkins, ghosts and bats, we matched spiders with numbers, we created spiders with playdough and pipe cleaners, we matched letters/pumpkins, we created jack o lantern faces on pumpkins, we made playdough pumpkins and we investigated pumpkins throughout the week. We touched them, picked them up, predicted sink or float (they all sank), predicted and counted how many seeds inside the pumpkin. Mrs. Beam carved the pumpkin, and we reached inside to touch the ooey, gooey, sticky, slimy texture. We named our 3 pumpkins, Dad, Mom and Baby Pumpkin! We even tasted some cooked pumpkin and some of us gave it a thumbs up!!! We were ALL Risk-takers this week and Mrs. Beam was very proud!!!

October 29 and 30… Please remember there is NO SCHOOL this coming Sunday, October 29 and Monday, October 30. Teachers will have Professional Development training.

October 31… Students return to school and should wear their regular school uniform. It is Halloween day and we will celebrate with some Halloween Centers, but students should NOT dress up again. Thank you to the parents who have agreed to come and assist in some fun activities/ centers next Tuesday. We are looking forward to seeing you!

October 31… Remember we have SWIMMING when we return. Please continue to let your child practice at home, dressing and undressing. They are doing better each week!

November 1– Field Trip permission and money due! You have received a Permission Slip in your child’s folder regarding our first field trip. We are going to Little Explorers at MCC on November 9 and we need the permission slip signed and returned, along with 75 AED (please send correct change). * We are allowed to take only 2 parents along with us, so if you are interested, please make sure you mark the permission slip accordingly. We will notify you if you are going.

November 2Flag Day… more information to come as we receive it.

We are beginning to introduce our first set of letters and sounds. We are working on the letters: E, F, H, I, L, T and U over the next several weeks. Ask your child to tell you what they are learning and let them practice at home with you!

Thanks for all of your support and for having your child on time and at school every day!

HALLOWEEN COSTUMES… Please allow your child to dress up in their Halloween Costume, THIS THURSDAY, OCTOBER 26 for school. They should wear the costume to school, as we will parade shortly after 8:00. There will be NO TIME TO CHANGE BEFORE THE PARADE! If it’s a costume that you think may get dirty or too hot/aggravating for all day at school, then please send in a change of clothes that they can change by themself (no need for uniform). Parents are invited to view the parade (from outside). We should be coming outside around 8:10 and there will be designated areas for you to stand and watch! If you choose not to have your child dress up, please allow them to dress down that day… no uniform needed!

HALLOWEEN TREATS… Most of you have sent in the treats for Trick or Treating. If you have not, please do so as soon as possible. I need to organize them and sort them out with the other KG1 teachers. Remember, no nuts please!

HALLOWEEN CENTERS… I have had two moms to volunteer to come next Tuesday, October 31 to prepare a Halloween Center. If you are interested, I would love to have 2 more parents. Let me know by this Thursday!

October 19, 2017…

This week we… read about pumpkins, counted with pumpkins, made a Jack-o-lantern faces with shapes, used playdough to make faces, punched pumpkin shapes, created Googly-eyed monsters, created AB patterns, explored in the rice table, sang, danced, exercised and so much more! Most importantly we were so Principled and Caring this week… Mrs. Beam’s heart has been very happy at how well we listen and follow directions and how we are treating others! We also made paper lanterns and tasted Jalebi in celebration of Diwali! Below is important information regarding a variety of topics… please email me if you have ANY Questions… Mrs. Beam

Guidance- Mr. Fields visited our classroom this week for our first Guidance lesson. We met his puppet named Puppy and learned how to participate in his monthly lessons. He will teach us many great things about our feelings, emotions, communicating and how to treat others.

Swimming– KG1 began swimming this week! Overall all students did a great job undressing, keeping their clothes organized, keeping up with their pool items (towel, shoes, goggles) and following directions at the pool. There are a couple who are still practicing dressing “after” swimming! The best way to help your child, is to teach them to do it by their self… they can do it if you let them… I promise 🙂
Halloween Treats Due Monday– If you have not already done so, please send in 30 small items (individual pencils, sticker packs, small toys, erasers, boxes of raisins, bags of pretzels, etc) by Sunday, October 22. Diaso has great selections of these small items. These items will be given out when they Trick or Treat within the classrooms, and we will provide bags for all KG1 students. PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANYTHING WITH NUTS!
Halloween Costume and Parade– On Thursday, October 26, your child is encouraged to wear a Halloween costume to school. We would ask that they not wear face masks or bring weapons, but that this be a fun day. We will enter the building at our regular 7:55 time and ask parents to stay outside. We will then prepare for our Elementary School parade, as we will parade outside, following a designated path, where parents will be able to watch and take photos. Parade should begin after 8:00. If your child wishes to change later, please send appropriate change of clothes.
Teacher Professional Development/ No School for Students– Please remember that Sunday, October 29 and Monday, October 30 there is no school for students, as teachers have Professional Development.
Tuesday, October 31– Students return to school. It is actually Halloween, but students should wear School Uniform, and we will do some Halloween activities and centers in our classroom.

We feel that we need to be visible about the procedure and clear to all of you in order to make the swimming program a success. If your child is not swimming because of a doctor’s note then we want to be able to plan ahead and find an engaging place for them to be during their swimming class.

Please read the below rules of the pool and the consequences. The teacher reviews the rules before every swim class and you can help reinforce them at home by also reviewing them with your child.

  • Walk feet only-No running

  • Use #2 voice

  • Wear swimming caps

  • Slip in pool

  • Gentle play

    • If the child does not follow the rules they will be told to sit out of the water.

    • If during the swimming class they continue to not follow the rules, they will not be allowed to swim for the remainder of that day’s class.
