May 17, 2018…

RAMADAN KAREEM! Ramadan Schedule began today. Just a reminder that our morning schedule for KG1 has changed slightly. Students may not be dropped off before 7:30, as there is no supervision until that time. We will be staying on the playground each morning until 8:25 since the weather is cooler then. YOUR CHILD SHOULD BRING THEIR WATER BOTTLE TO THE PLAYGROUND WHEN THEY ARRIVE AT SCHOOL EACH DAY. There is no need for you to wait for the whistle to blow, and we will do our attendance after 8:25.

Dismissal/pickup is normal 12:45 time for KG1. Lastly, if your child rides the school bus, remind them that they will be riding a full bus of ALL ages PK-Grade 12.
Also, in KG1 we continue to drink water and have our 2 regular snacks, so please send in as normal.
How We Express Ourselves– Our performances begin next week! We hope that your child has been planning, preparing and practicing for their presentations of re-telling a favorite story. There is no set amount of time that it should last, but they should just tell the whole story. Any props, costumes, books, puppets, etc. should be placed in a bag and sent in the morning of their performance. I will video each performance and send to you via blog or email link. PARENTS DO NOT NEED TO ATTEND, AS WE WILL VIDEO FOR YOU- THANKS!

Performance Schedule for Week of May 20-24…

Sunday, May 20- Karlee, Sam
Monday, May 21- Nora, Leo
Tuesday, May 22- NO PERFORMANCES- SWIMMING!
Wednesday, May 23- Adam, Ayla
Thursday, May 24- Jude, Ryan, Nadine, Taha
FREE FLOW SUNDAYS– We are continuing our Free Flow each Sunday, so please send your child to school in their BLUE shirt.

SWIMMING– We will continue to swim each Tuesday, until otherwise notified. Your child should wear their swimsuit to school, under their school uniform. We unfortunately do not have the time to dress them before swimming. After swimming, they are expected to put their school uniform back on (per school guidelines), and please wear or send regular velcro sneakers as flip flops and sandals are more likely to make them fall on the playground.

PARENT WORKSHOP- Thank you to all the parents who attended our first KG1 Parent Workshop on Tuesday! This was our first time using this format, and we hope to be able to offer these next year on a more regular basis. We will be sending the links to some of the presentations to you via email.

THANK YOU AGAIN… BELOW IS THE LINK TO THE AMAZINGLY, SWEET AND SPECIAL VIDEO THAT YOU ALL CONTRIBUTED TO FOR ME LAST WEEK… MY HEART IS SO HAPPY!

May 10, 2018…

Where oh where does the time go? I truly feel that I just posted my first blog to you all, welcoming you to the new school year and getting to know you. Yet, here we are, mid-May and only 6 more weeks of KG1!!!

I want to THANK ALL OF YOU AND YOUR PRECIOUS CHILDREN for the very special video that I was presented today. It brought tears to my eyes, but only tears of joy… so proud of how far each one of them have come in a short amount of time! This is the BEST gift I could ever receive and it will continue to make my heart very happy for years to come… I won’t get emotional just yet, because we still have several weeks of school, but for sure the Goodbyes will come later and I will miss each one of my special kiddos! Special thanks to Ms. Dina, Ms. Gen and Mrs. Hanna for their behind the scenes SECRET work!

We are always busy at school and that’s what makes it so fun I guess! We have read several versions of The Three Little Pigs this week. So fun to compare and contrast what is the same and what is different. Ask your child which version they enjoyed? Or which pig is their favorite? Or which ending (for the wolf) did they like best? We made stick puppets and decorated storyboards for the pigs this week. This helps to give ideas about how they could tell their story to the class in the coming weeks. However they choose is fine, but the main thing is that their self-confidence is increasing and I am so proud of that!

I have also begun to assess again to see how far we have come with letters/sounds/concepts of print/number identification/writing numerals/rote counting/1:1 correspondence/ sorting/ shapes within the environment/ and so forth.. WOW, are we smart and ready for KG2!!! So proud of all the hard work from each child!

LITERATURE BAGS- Your child brought home their Literature Bag for the last time this week. Since Ramadan begins next week, our work hours are reduced and our TA’s will not have time to prepare the bags each week. We hope you have enjoyed them!

FREE FLOW SUNDAYS- Please remember to have your child wear their BLUE t-shirts each Sunday.

SWIMMING– We are continuing to swim each week on TUESDAYS. Your child has learned a great deal of independence this year and we are proud of the way they can undress and redress themselves. Remember swim caps are required by each student.

PARENT WORKSHOP– For those of you who replied to our Parent Workshop survey- Thank you! We look forward to seeing you next Tuesday, May 15 in the Elementary Library. We will serve coffee at 7:30 in Elementary Library foyer on the top floor and will begin by 7:45.

NO SCHOOL ON SUNDAY! There is a school holiday on Sunday, May 13.

RAMADAN– Timings for KG1 actually does not change. Our day will begin at 8:00 and end at 12:45, as normal. If you bring your child to school, you will still drop them at the playground as we will play there for a while since it’s cooler in the mornings. Pickup is still 12:45 and buses will leave at 1:15. You may want to talk to your bus rider about lots of kids being on the bus (elementary, middle and high school), as they are used to only PK and KG1 together.

STORY PRESENTATIONS- It won’t be long until your child will retell a story to the class. This will only be for our class… no parents and no other students. They should be very comfortable by now as we continue to practice our fairy tales in front of the class each day. If you have questions about this, PLEASE EMAIL ME.

TEACHER APPRECIATION– For those of you who sent in food for our Teacher Appreciation lunch on Wednesday, thank you so much!
Love,
Mrs. Beam

May 3, 2018…

WE HAD A BUSY WEEK… We read many version of The Three Billy Goats Gruff and acted out the story many times. We also made puppets and storyboards. We are learning so much about different characters and how changing our voice makes it so much more fun to tell the story! We are continuing our Fairy Tale unit and will read The Three Little Pigs next week. For math, we are still practicing writing numerals 0-10, as we often switch numbers around, but we’re improving each week. We are getting more independent and that was particularly noticeable as we began swimming again this week! Please let your child do basic chores at home either independently or with your help, but not doing everything for them. Let them open their own containers (they do it everyday at school)… Let them dress/undress themself (you may have to tell the nanny)… Let them use their voice to tell you how they feel, what they’re thinking or what they did at school. I promise they can be very independent if given the opportunity 🙂

Tuesday, May 8 will be the last week that we will send home Literature Bags in KG1. During Ramadan, our TA’s will leave after the students leave and there is no time for them to organize the bags. We hope you and your child have enjoyed these great books and activities to build language and literacy skills. Maybe you can make some for home!

We want your child to continue using IXL each week throughout the remainder of the school year and even into the summer… They will still have an account! We are sending home one final list for May/June and your child can repeat as many as you think they need to practice.
We will continue swimming each week on Tuesday. Although most students made great progress in dressing/undressing since we last swam, please make sure your child can show you how to do it by themselves. Also, towels and swim caps are required items and if your child only wears slippers/flip flops to school on their swim day, there is a risk they may trip or fall while on the playground. Sneakers are always a good idea for the rest of the school day.
It won’t be long before we begin our How We Express Ourselves story retelling to the whole class. Please allow your child to practice retelling and acting out the story with you at home, a couple times each week, so they will be comfortable. Any props, costumes, puppets, etc. should also be made at home soon, so they can practice with them. THE SCHEDULE IS LISTED BELOW…
Let me know if you have any questions.
Sunday, May 20- Karlee, Sam
Monday, May 21- Nora, Leo
Tuesday, May 22- NO PERFORMANCES- SWIMMING!
Wednesday, May 23- Adam, Ayla
Thursday, May 24- Jude, Ryan, Nadine, Taha

Sunday, May 27- Kareem, Xinyi
Monday, May 28- Alia, Mohammed
Tuesday, May 29- NO PERFORMANCES- SWIMMING!
Wednesday, May 30- Haya, Hao
Thursday, May 31- Miaohan, Nabeel, Abdulla
CONTINUE WEARING BLUE CLASS T-SHIRTS EVERY SUNDAY FOR OUR FREE-FLOW!

April 29, 2018…

Thank you parents for attending the Student Led Conferences last week... we had 100% participation!!! I was super proud of each of my students for sharing their learning with you and being so brave while doing so! I hope you were pleased with their self-confidence and improvements since September! We are continuing to practice many things and learn a few new things for the next 2 months.

Please return your child’s Portfolio by the end of this week. You will be able to take home on your child’s last day of school!

SWIMMING… Scheduled to begin THIS Tuesday, May 1, but I will confirm by email and/or blog post on Monday. We received an email this afternoon that some maintenance is taking place and we could be delayed til next week. In the meantime, remember, your child should WEAR THEIR SWIMSUIT TO SCHOOL ON TUESDAYS, UNDER THEIR REGULAR CLOTHING. THIS TUESDAY IS ALSO HAG AL LAILA, SO THEY CAN WEAR SWIMSUIT UNDER EMIRATI OR CELEBRATORY CLOTHING. YOUR CHILD SHOULD ALSO BE PREPARED TO UNDRESS AND REDRESS THEMSELVES WITH NO ASSISTANCE FROM TEACHERS NOW.

Also regarding Swimming…  As per the ES handbook, pupils who are well enough to attend school will swim and take part in the activities with the following exceptions:

  • Ear infection- with doctor’s note
  • Cast on an injured or broken limb
  • Uncontrolled asthma

If a student does not have swim clothes, they will have to sit and watch our class swim for 30 minutes. This is not ideal, especially with the increasing temperatures.

HOW WE EXPRESS OURSELVES PERFORMANCE… I need your child’s paper returned this week, regarding the book title that they will be doing their retell story about. The schedule for performances is posted below and also on the MAY calendar that you received today.

Sunday, May 20- Karlee, Sam
Monday, May 21- Nora, Leo
Tuesday, May 22- NO PERFORMANCES- SWIMMING!
Wednesday, May 23- Adam, Ayla
Thursday, May 24- Jude, Ryan, Nadine, Taha

Sunday, May 27- Kareem, Xinyi
Monday, May 28- Alia, Mohammed
Tuesday, May 29- NO PERFORMANCES- SWIMMING!
Wednesday, May 30- Haya, Hao
Thursday, May 31- Miaohan, Nabeel, Abdulla

Most of you responded that your child will be attending school until the scheduled last day on June 21. If for any reason your plans change and they leave before that day, PLEASE, PLEASE LET ME KNOW! For many reasons, including us gathering all their work, portfolios, change of clothes, art smocks, etc. But most importantly, Mrs. Beam likes closure… I feel very strongly about being able to say “goodbye” to each of my students. They don’t like surprises like that and honestly I would cry if they left before I was expecting them to. I should also tell you now, Mr. Beam and I are moving back to our home when school ends and will not be returning next year… SO ANOTHER REASON THAT IT IS IMPORTANT FOR ME TO SAY A PROPER GOODBYE! The reason is totally personal/family related, and is no way related to any changes that are taking place at UAS.

We celebrated Leo and Hao’s 5th birthdays last week, as they have summer birthdays. It is always nice to celebrate with our school friends!

This week we will celebrate Mohammed on May 2, Nora on May 3 (actual birthday May 28) and Jude next week on May 10 (actual birthday May 20). We do not celebrate birthdays during Ramadan so that will conclude all birthdays for the year!

KEEP YOUR CHILD HOME IF THEY ARE NOT WELL…

Finally, we seem to be sharing a virus/sickness in our classroom. I know of at least 5 students who have either had fever at home and/or school. Some with vomiting. Please remember our school policy is student’s with fevers cannot be in school, nor can they return until they have been fever-free for at least 24 hours. Which means, if we send home from school with fever, they cannot return the following day. Lots of sleep, healthy food and hand-washing are key.

April 24, 2018…

The BIG day is finally here… Student-Led Conferences! We have been practicing and preparing for you and I can’t wait for your child to SHARE with YOU, what they have been learning. This is how it will work…
1. You AND your child come to my room at your scheduled time Wednesday or Thursday (they do not need to wear their uniform).
2. PLEASE be on time, as these are 30 minutes only. If you are late, please enter the room and begin, but the ending time is the ending time, so that I may prepare for the next group.
3. Your child will be sharing with you, while 2 other students are sharing with their parents, at the same time. The reason we do this is to build self-confidence and gain support from others. For example: If Student A is shy and doesn’t know what to do, they will see Student B sharing and then follow their lead. Plus it doesn’t seem so overwhelming, when they see the others doing it as well. So, 3 families at a time.
4. You and your child will rotate to 6 different areas of the classroom (Letters/Words, Rhyming Words, Journal Writing, Numbers, Story-telling and Calendar). Your child will choose any area to begin, and can rotate in any order. Please don’t go to the same area as another student, until they are finished.
5. You will take your child’s portfolio with you as you leave. Please keep at home and return by May 2.
***At each area, there will be directions for you and some sentence starters on ways to Praise your child for being such a thinker, so brave, etc. ***
NEW PYP UNIT- PERFORMANCE INFORMATION
A paper came home this week in your child’s folder, titled How We Express Ourselves. It explains that your child will be planning, preparing then performing a re-telling of a story of their choice!
What I failed to do, was write your child’s name and performance day on the paper, before Ms. Gen placed them in the folders (my mistake).
So, here is the schedule of your child’s day of their individual performance. Please let me know if you have a conflict with this date or any questions. I will be sharing more info each week on the blog about this performance. For now, have your child select a book that they LOVE and start reading together each night…  If you do not have a book at home, please come visit the school library to check out a book for your child. I prefer not to loan out my personal classroom books, but will do so if you request it.
Sunday, May 20- Karlee, Sam
Monday, May 21- Nora, Leo
Tuesday, May 22- NO PERFORMANCES- SWIMMING!
Wednesday, May 23- Adam, Ayla
Thursday, May 24- Jude, Ryan, Nadine, Taha

Sunday, May 27- Kareem, Xinyi
Monday, May 28- Alia, Mohammed
Tuesday, May 29- NO PERFORMANCES- SWIMMING!

April 19, 2018…

Another busy week on KG1. We read Goldilocks and the Three Bears many, many times and compared several versions of the story. Each child had numerous times to re-tell the story to their friends and the class. We used a variety of manipulatives to re-tell in their own words. We are building the self-confidence they will need to present or perform their own story in May.

We wrote in our journals about our favorite part of the Goldilocks and the Three Bears story, as well as used our engineering ideas on how to build a chair for the bears. We matched pictures to beginning sounds and also 3 letter words… yes, some of us are reading 3 letter words all by ourself! We also demonstrated how to make and create “unique” things in the Maker Space Room. And the Airport in the Dramatic Play area allowed us to role play many different jobs!
We continued learning/reviewing numbers 0-20 by writing, counting, matching and most importantly demonstrating 1:1 correspondence (which basically means they can show me how many of something to match the number they see).  We are reviewing the numbers 15-20 mostly now.
We practiced what each child’s role is in the Student-Led Conferences for next week. As we stated before, this is not a traditional parent-teacher conference, but a time for your child to show and tell you what we are doing in KG1 and share their vast knowledge of learning with you! It is a special time and hopefully they will not be shy. They have each truly grown by leaps and bounds and I am expecting great things from them. I will have questions for you to ask them and comments (praise) for you to share as you rotate throughout the stations next week.
Hopefully by now, you have read over the information for our Student Led Conferences, which will be held next Wednesday, April 25 and Thursday, April 26. Thank you to those who have reserved your times already. If you have not, please do so by Sunday, April 22, so we can make plans accordingly. Also, there is no school those 2 days, but YOUR CHILD must come with you to the conference.

The BookWorm Book Fair begins next Monday. If you have a conference scheduled for Wednesday, you are welcome to take your child to the library to visit the Book Fair. The Book Fair will close Wednesday afternoon, so if your conference is Thursday, you may want to take your child to visit on Sunday, Monday or Tuesday before or after school.

If you don’t get a chance to shop at the Book Fair, we will be sending home one final Scholastic Book Order in the coming weeks. This is a great way to get reasonably priced books in your child’s hands, especially for your summer reading.

As mentioned last week, we have begun our final PYP unit, How We Express Ourselves. You and your child will receive a letter on Sunday, explaining the requirements for a final performance/presentation that will conclude our unit. This is an exciting unit and if you have any questions after reading the letter, please email me.

We surveyed KG1 parents about some possible workshop ideas. You will be receiving information regarding those plans very soon.

Your child is encouraged to continue using IXL each week. Even 10-15 minutes during the week, will help support and enhance their learning! AND I am still printing certificates each Monday, for those students who complete activities each week at home!
Swimming begins on May 1 for my class. Please have your child practice changing clothes and showing you how much they improved since the fall.

Finally, a slip of paper came home in your child’s folder TODAY regarding “your plans” for their last day of KG1. With Ramadan, Eid and many families traveling, we are just trying to plan ahead. Please return that slip of paper on Sunday of next week.

Have a great weekend… Mrs. Beam
