March 1, 2018…

Hello from home ūüėĒ

I was absent from school the past 3 days, due to a virus that caused severe headache, body aches, sore throat and fatigue. My doctor thought it be best if I stay home to rest, and of course save my kiddos from catching my germs! I am feeling better and thank you for your kind emails! Should be back full swing on Sunday!

Actually, I hope to see you at UAS on Saturday, as we celebrate our annual International Day!!! This is always my Favorite day of year! I will be there a couple hours and hope to see my kiddos as well! Times are 11:00-5:00.

Book Week is this coming week, and several things are planned for KG1. On Sunday, please have your child wear a shirt with WORDS (to celebrate literacy). If they don’t have one, help them make one, by writing words on masking tape or duct tape and sticking on any shirt. Or be adventurous and let them write words on an old thirty. They could also wear their Blue class shirt, as we have Free Flow.

If you ordered the UAS Book Week t-shirt, we will send them home on Sunday, and your child can wear any/every day next week!

Then, Sunday through Wednesday are¬†Mystery Reader days if you want to surprise our class and show up to READ! I still have a spot for Monday and Wednesday at 12:30… Email me ASAP, if interested. I will assume you are bringing your own books, unless you email me. I am happy to send one if you let me know!

Also, A Date with Dad is next Wednesday morning from 8:05-8:20. I have 3 dads coming to read so far and would love to have more! Email me ASAP, if interested!

Finally, Storybook Character Day is next Thursday!!! All students are encouraged to dress as their favorite book character! We will have a parade and you are welcome to come and see all the creative costumes. Please be on the ES playground at 8:00am to watch the parade.

Stuck for costume ideas? Check out some options below:
Fancy Nancy ‚Äď dress in fancy clothes with a lot of jewelry
Paper Bag Princess – brown clothing + paper bag
101 Dalmatians – white clothing + black spots stuck on
Geronimo Stilton – green pants, shirt, green jacket, mouse ears + tail, glasses
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – rabbit, Alice, Charlie, Mad Hatter, Queen of Hearts
Go Away Big Green Monster ‚Äď make a green monster mask and dress in green
Gruffalo ‚Äď make a gruffalo mask and dress in brown
The Very Hungry Caterpillar ‚Äď make some beautiful butterfly wings from paper
The Grouchy Ladybug ‚Äď dress in red with black spots and make a grouchy face
Pinkalicious/Aqualicious/Purplicious- dress all in pink, aqua, purple
Pete the Cat ‚Äď Dress in blue with cat ears and whiskers
If You Give a Mouse a Cookie ‚Äď Make some mouse ears and a paper cookie

Hopefully Ms. Gen captured some cute pics of the students dressed up on Wednesday… I will upload them on Saturday.

Have a great weekend and tell your child I missed them this week!

February 22, 2018…

We had a super week filled with fun activities about our planet Earth. We have been making the connection with our planet of how it’s not only beautiful and we can take care of it, but how we share this place with people all over the world. We discussed how fortunate that we are living in Dubai, and attending an International School, filled with so many cultures from around the world! We played around the Globe games, dressed multi-cultural paper dolls, practiced our Handwriting Without Tears (app), illustrated ourself in our national dress or colors, practiced our independent reading for 5 minutes each day, practiced reading our books to a buddy for 3 minutes, explored outdoor centers, Free Flow throughout the Early Years Classrooms, continued our Literacy focus on the 16 letters that have been introduced, practiced all of our Math skills and SO MUCH MORE!

As a class, we were more chatty this week than usual??? Not sure what changed, but by today, we seemed to have settled back down. I am so proud of the progress each child is making in “their own time”. Some are still learning sounds and letter names and some are beginning to READ on their own!!! It’s amazing what we can do in KG1.

We are super busy from now until Spring Break (the end of March) so please continue to read all blog posts, emails and notes that come home in folders. Thanks for all you do… Here’s looking ahead…

  • The whole UAS community will celebrate International Day on Saturday, March 3. This week we began to explore different countries, leading up to our International Day. Ms. Amber is teaching about France, Mrs. Beam about Greece, Ms. CC about New Zealand and Mrs. DeCruz about China.

  • There is No School this coming Sunday, Feb. 25, as teachers have Professional Development.¬†

  • For Show and Tell next week, we are asking children to ONLY bring something from their Home Country (small flag, poster, photo, object, OR food to share – must be individual pieces for each student). Sunday Show and Tell students, can bring on Monday.¬†

  • UAS Elementary will celebrate International Dress Day on Wednesday, Feb 28. Your child should wear their national dress or colors of their flag! This is different than the calendar first stated, and this year there is No Parade. Rest assured we will take LOTS of photos to post on our blog and Flickr accounts!!!¬†
  • You should have received an earlier post from us this week, regarding a Parent Volunteer opportunity to be a Mystery Reader or a Date with Dad. Please sign up on the link provided, or email me directly. This is the week of March 4-8.¬†Volunteer to Read to our Class

  • If you ordered a t-shirt for Book Week, the deadline was today and t-shirts “should” come home with your child next Thursday, March 1.¬†

February 17, 2018…

Dear Parents… Sorry for not getting this out to you on Thursday. Mrs. Beam was super busy organizing our staff picnic for today! Now that is over and I’m back on track ūüôā
We had a super fun week, especially with Valentine’s Day and Chinese New Year celebrations this week! I will add pics to my Flickr account later this week… and PLEASE let your child take a look with you…. many of them told me last week, they have never seen their photos.
Thank you again to Sam’s, Leonardo’s, Jude’s, Ryan’s, Nora’s and Nadine’s moms for volunteering to organize our Valentine’s Centers. The Bingo Game, Decorating cupcakes, the Heart beaded bracelets and of course the fun of delivering their Valentine’s to their mailboxes, were all super exciting! They all left school with a box full of goodies on Thursday. Thank you too, for all of my sweet notes and sweet treats! You are so thoughtful!
On Thursday, we learned more about Chinese New Year (this is the Year of the Dog). Thank you again to Hao’s, Miaohan’s, and Xinyi’s parents for sending in such cool decorations and chocolates! We made red and yellow paper lantern and did a bit of Dragon Dancing too!
I LOVE teaching at an International School, where we get to have these amazing experiences together!
So for this week…¬†
  • Don’t forget to wear BLUE shirt tomorrow for Free Flow Inquiry.
  • Last week, we sent home a blank, International Paper Doll for you and your child to decorate to represent your home country. If your child is from 2 countries, be creative and do a mix of both. THESE ARE DUE THIS THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 22.¬†We will be displaying them on our bulletin board! Here are some examples… You can use a mix of paper or fabric, crayons, markers, yarn for hair, etc. etc.
  • No School next¬†Sunday February¬†25, due to Teacher Professional Development.
  • We will be celebrating International Week beginning this week, until next Thursday, March 1, in class. We will be sending home more information, but you can start thinking about what your child will wear on Thursday, March 1 for International Dress Day, to represent their home country.¬†We are also discussing the possibility of food that week???
  • Look for a blog post and email later this week, to invite you to come read to our class for Book Week, that is just after International Day!

Thanks for all you do… Keep working on IXL each week… Read to your child each night and let them practice more and more responsibility of doing things by them self… Thanks again! Mrs. Beam ūüôā

February 8, 2018…

What a great week of KG1 we had. We continued The¬†Very Hungry Caterpillar book (by Eric Carle) and activities (like counting, retelling the story and reading our individual books we made. We also read The Very Grouchy Ladybug (by Eric Carle) and compared the two stories as well as discussed the way that he illustrates all of his books! Ask your child what “insist” means, from the book!

We continue to learn about our planet, as we read The Earth Book and illustrated and dictated how we can each keep our planet clean and healthy. We are continuing to review the first set of letters (E, F, I, H, L, T and U) and the current set (B, C, D, G, J, O, P, Q, S) and I am happy to say that most of our class is able to name and give the sound of each one! Continuing to practice IXL each week, will also improve their reading readiness!

This past week, we began a 5 minute READING TIME, 3 days each week. Reading? you say… of course! We can READ THE PICTURES! We can READ FROM MEMORY (if they know the book already) and some students are beginning to READ SOME WORDS! Exposure, Exposure, Exposure… please let your child SHOW YOU at home, what they are able to read, with familiar books! Read with them EVERY night… MAKES MY HEART VERY HAPPY!!!

Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching and we have been busy preparing. We made heart decorations for the classroom, decorated our cereal boxes (that will be used as our Valentine Mailbox this coming week), made hearts for our family members and wrote Feel Better and signed our names for Valentine cards that will be delivered to the Al Jalila Children’s Hospital next week (organized by our UAS PTSO). I have attached the information if you would like to support this wonderful cause as well…

  • We had a super, fun KG1 Sports Day today! We were so proud of how well our students followed directions and participated in all of the activities! They probably were VERY tired when they arrived home… lots of pictures will be uploaded to my FLICKR account today!

  • IXL- The list of activities that we sent home a couple of weeks ago, are Pre K activities. (KG1 here is the same as PK in the states). So please have them complete the PK activities first, and if successful, feel free to move on to K activities.

  • No School on Sunday, Feb 11. Teacher PD

  • If you have not done so already, please remember to send in the Valentine‚Äôs cards that your child has prepared for their classmates. We need these when we return on Monday, Feb. 12.

  • Your child should wear their Regular UAS uniform next week, Feb. 12, 13 and 15. Feb 14 we ask that they wear Pink, Red or White clothing for Valentines’ Day.

  • Thank you to the parents who volunteered to come in on Wednesday to do activities and/or send in a snack. Again, if you are sending a snack, just send with your child… no need to come to school, as this is not a class party- just a snack!

  • We will acknowledge the Chinese New Year on Thursday, Feb. 15. You may have received a message from the school that our students can dress in red and yellow, but KG1 will wear their regular uniform. Thank you to Hao, Miaohan and Xinyi’s parents for sending in a special treat for Thursday!¬†
  • We will send home International Paper Dolls on Feb. 12 with instructions on this parent/child, home activity.
HAVE A WONDERFUL LONG WEEKEND… ENJOY THE AMAZING WEATHER WITH YOUR FAMILY!

February 1, 2018…

Wow, what a quick month January was! Hard to believe February is here and we will be very busy, so it will likely pass quickly too!
  • You should have received a¬†February Calendar¬†in your child’s folder this week! Please post in a visible space, as we have a lot happening in KG1!!!
  • Your child should continue to wear their¬†BLUE¬†class t-shirt each Sunday¬†for our Free Flow Inquiry. Ask your child what new things they have explored in different classrooms the past couple of Sundays. This has been a great learning opportunity for each child both socially and academically!
  • We hope you and your child have your ideas about the¬†Valentine’s Cards¬†that you are making, printing or purchasing! This is a fun time for you to sit with them and work together. Remember that each friend’s name should be written on each card, and your child should WRITE THEIR OWN NAME INSIDE, so the friends will know who gave the card to them. These are due by Feb. 12.

  • We sent out a¬†Valentine’s Day Activities and Sign Up¬†sheet this week (also on the blog). If you are able to volunteer that day with an activity OR to send in a snack, PLEASE sign up on the sheet this week. Thanks so much to the moms who have volunteered already!
  • Our¬†PK/KG1 Sports Day is Thursday, February 8.¬†Your child should come to school wearing their¬†BLUE¬†class t-shirt and velcro running shoes.¬†This will be a teacher managed activity and no parents are needed.
  • IXL¬†is going very well and when your child utilizes this program, great things happen. It is a great review of what we are learning at school and the results are showing that it works! Please allow your child to login and practice for about 5-10 minutes, a few times each week!
  • There is¬†NO SCHOOL on Sunday, February 11.¬†There is Teacher Professional Development that day.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION from Dr. Amna, UAS School Physician…¬†

Dear Parents,

To prevent spread of infections in the school, we recommend that your child stay home from school if they are not feeling well and notify the school on the first day of their absence.

Please keep your child at home and seek medical advice if he or she has any of these symptoms:

  • Fever (greater than 100 degrees and your child may return to school only after his or her temperature has been fever free, for a minimum of 24 hours)
  • Lots of nasal congestion with frequent blowing of nose
  • Frequent congested (wet) or croupy cough and sore throat
  • Vomiting or Diarrhea
  • General malaise or feelings of fatigue, discomfort, weakness or muscle aches

By keeping your child when they are sick you will help prevent others from catching their illness.

To help prevent the flu and other colds, please teach your children good hygiene habits:

  • Cover your nose and mouthwith a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue away after use and wash your hands. If a tissue is not available, cover your mouth and nose with your sleeve or the inside of your elbow, not your hand.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread this way.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces or objects.Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home or work, especially when someone is ill.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

Colds are the most contagious during the first 48 hours.¬† A child who has a fever should remain at home until “fever free” for a minimum of 24 hours.¬† A child who has started antibiotics needs to be on the medication for 24 hours before considered non-contagious and able to return to school. ¬†¬†Your child should be physically able to participate in all school activities on return to school.¬† Keeping a sick child at home will minimize the spread of infections and viruses in the classroom.

For further information on flu and other viral illnesses please refer to www.cdc.gov or contact school clinic team.

Sincerely,

Dr. Amna Ahmed Butt

School Physician

January 25, 2018…

This week in KG1, we began our new PYP¬† unit, Sharing Our Planet. We investigated outdoors by brainstorming and taking a closer look at nature, what is natural and what is man-made and looking at images and books that illustrate our beautiful planet. We painted watercolors of what we love about nature, made books of our Nature Walk and observed what we collected from our Nature Walk. We continued our focus on letters C, O, Q, G, S, J, D, P and B with many activities. We are continuing to review the first set of letters as well. If you chat with your child and see that they are struggling with the first set (E, F, H, I, L, T and U), feel free to support them and practice at home. The IXL site is great for this, as well as ABC Mouse (I use at school) and Starfall (that we use at school). We read The Gruffalo¬†(one of my top 5 favorites) and made adorable puppets that we’ll share with you a little later. Have your child re-tell the story to you and ask him how the mouse was so tricky/clever/smart???

Next week, we will begin an author focus on Eric Carle books, as we read The Very Hungry Caterpillar and others. This unit on nature and our planet is so great… if your child wants to send in something they have found outdoors, feel free to do so. I will place a container in the classroom for observing!

  • We had a super fun day at¬†Uptown Mirdif Park¬†yesterday. The students were well behaved and enjoyed learning more about our new PYP unit, Sharing Our Planet. Thank you so much to Leo’s, Taha’s, Nabeel’s and Jude’s moms for helping chaperone our trip… I couldn’t have done it without you!
  • UAS is hosting a¬†Fun Fair, tomorrow, January 26, 10:30-8:00,¬†here at our school. The event is to build awareness for our community of People of Determination. This is a free event and if you don’t have plans, stop by for an hour or so to support these special initiatives.
  • Scholastic Book Orders¬†were due today, but I am extended them until Sunday. If you are ordering books for your child, please send in order form and correct change on Sunday!
  • Students had a wonderful time this past Sunday, as we began our Free Flow Inquiry into multiple classrooms. We will continue that and ask that your child wear their¬†COLORED CLASS T-SHIRT AGAIN NEXT SUNDAY!
  • If you have not done so already, please send in a¬†large empty cereal box¬†for your child to decorate for their Valentine’s Day. We need these no later than¬†Jan. 29, as we will begin decorating that day!
  • Valentine’s Day¬†is a special day about love and friendships. We hope you and your child have made a plan about the cards that they will give to each of their friends in our classroom. A list of names has been shared with you and¬†ALL CARDS SHOULD BE SENT IN NO LATER THAN FEB. 12.
  • As stated last week, we are excited that our students can now practice both¬†Math and Language skills on their IXL account, while they are at home. This week, we sent home a list of what we would like your child to practice for Math and Language. Remember they should login as themselves and not their siblings, so we can track their progress. Ms. Hanna recognizes the top 3 students (amount of time spent, not accuracy) each month with a special certificate. Who will be next???
  • The January calendar states that¬†KG1 Sports Day¬†will be February 1, but it has been changed. Sports Day is now on¬†Thursday, February 8. It will be a regular day for students, but they should again wear their COLORED CLASS T-SHIRT.

  • PTSO Counselor’s Coffee Morning (see attachment)¬†
