January 11, 2018…

Happy 2018 KG1 Parents and Students!

We hope you enjoyed your 3 week holiday and we are so excited to begin a new year with you and your child. We are looking forward to lots of fun and successes for the remainder of this KG1 school year!
As I told many of you during Parent Teacher Conferences, January is usually my “favorite”  month of the school year! The lightbulb (in the brain) seems to go off for most kids and things that didn’t make sense to them before, is finally coming around! They seem to begin connecting ideas and thoughts about prior learning and really maturing in their manners, their decisions and their thinking skills. I would add that if your child is still not able to write his/her first name (in all capitals OR lowercase) by themself, PLEASE practice with them a few minutes each night. We are now writing our name on all of our work at school. Writing your name is a big deal and I want them to all be confident in this important success!
What have we been up to?
This week was full of exciting things… We read The Mitten by Jan Brett (many times) and learned how Nicki lost one of his white mittens in the snow. Ask your child what happened to the mitten while it was lost in the snow (hint: 8 animals). We put mittens on our hands to hold ice, we made magical snow (called InstaSnow and I think you can purchase at Virgin Megastore), we played with marshmallows and cotton balls, we laced mittens, colored and cut mittens, made snowflakes, continued our 5 senses exploration, reviewed letters, sounds, numbers and patterns and TODAY we did a science experiment with Skittles and M&M’s! Ask your child about what “prediction” means and what the results of our experiments were!
Looking ahead…
* Books- Your child brought home a library book this week and Literature Bags will start back next week.
* BOTH library books and Literature Bags should be returned each and every Sunday.
* January Calendar- Hopefully you have seen the January calendar that came home in the take home folder this week. The Sundays that are marked for your child to wear their Blue Class T-shirt, is for a whole grade activity that we will be doing on Sundays. It is just to keep our children organized and there is nothing else needed from you. This is likely to continue for several weeks and will always be on Sundays!
* IXL- About half of my class has logged in and completed lots of Math questions on IXL. Please log in with your child and let them show you what they are learning. If they have been logging in their older brother or sister’s account, please let them begin their own, so I can track their progress. PLUS I have begun to print certificates each week for those that are completing the activities. An earlier blog post in December lists the skills we would like for them to review for January.
* Spare Clothes- If your child has had a growth spurt, you may want to send in a different change of clothes to keep at school in case of an accident.
*Student dress code at UAS was mentioned in the elementary blog earlier this week. Please make sure your child is wearing the UAS school uniform to school (T-shirt, Jacket,  shorts, trousers etc). We are noticing many children wearing non UAS uniform clothing, especially since the winter break.  In the Early Years we are happy for children to be wearing plain navy bottoms if need be due to uniform sizing.
* We will complete our How the World Works (5 Senses Unit) next week with more fun experiments!!!
Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy time with your family!
