Musical Instrument Design Challenge

“Providing students, a foundation in engineering design allows them to better engage in and aspire to solve the major societal and environmental challenges they will face in the decades ahead!” (nextgenerationscience.org)   

UAS middle school students will be using their critical thinking, team building, communication, design and engineering skills to create musical instruments out of recycled material.  After creating and improving their instruments, each small group of students will perform a song about science. It is essential for each student to participate in the design and creation process.  If performing during Ramadan is in conflict with your family’s religious beliefs please let your science teacher know.  We will be happy to make accommodations for the performance aspect of this assignment.

Parents, you can support your child by reminding them to bring in materials and assist them in researching how various instruments work.  You are welcome to join us for the middle school assembly on the morning of the 18th to celebrate the process students went through to achieve their instrument creations.   

Please note students will be using various tools to build their instruments. Students need to follow all directions and procedures when using the equipment. If a child cannot use the tools responsibly, they will lose the privilege of using them. For the safety of themselves and their classmates, students who are not responsible when using the tools will no longer be able to use them.  These students will need to write a paper instead of creating an instrument.

Exoplanet Presentations

Good day families of 7th grade astrophysicists,

Most of the 7th grade scientists have completed their Exoplanet Timeline and Travel poster.

Today your child will be asking you to support them as they make a model. This model does not have to be Styrofoam. Last year students made their exoplanet models out of cake, cardboard, clay, recycled materials and even cement. It’s good for their brains for them to be creative and it’s fun too. Perhaps the full moon will give them inspiration.

Later this week we are presenting for the Elementary School on Wed. and Thursday. We hope you will join us in the library next week to celebrate. The schedule looks like this:

Calling all Earth Scientists

Dear Parents of 7th grade Scientists,

• The 7th graders welcomed a guest engineer, this week. Thank you, Ramzi Khairallah for giving us insite into the building of earthquake resistant buildings.

• We have an exciting agenda for our next unit of study, Earth Science. Our first project “Timeline of my Exoplanet” will be due May 3 or May 4th.

• Please mark your calendar for our Exoplanet Presentations in the library. Science 2 will present on May 23 at 2:10, Science 3 on May 24th at 10:45, Science 4, May 24 at 10:45 and Science 1, May 24th at 2:10.

MS-ESS2-1. – Develop a model to describe the cycling of Earth’s materials and the flow of energy that drives this process.

MS-ESS2-2. – Construct an explanation based on evidence for how geoscience processes have changed Earth’s surface at varying time and spatial scales.

MS-ESS1-2. – Develop and use a model to describe the role of gravity in the motions within galaxies and the solar system.

Genetics Topics

Dear parents,

We need an expert scientist to join our classroom. Will you join us this week on Wed. or Thurs. for our panel discussion? Then you will get to vote on genetics research financing. In this project, the students are working in a team to form a consensus on how funding for genetics research should be distributed. Groups discuss their findings, decide the team’s stance on funding allocation and create a persuasive presentation. Each team will select a speaker for their team, introduce the “highlight” reel, and will participate as an expert in a panel discussion. 

Days for visit: Wed, Feb.8. at 8:10-8:50 (Science 3), 11:15-11:40 (Science 4), 2:45-3:10 (Science 1).
And on Thursday, Feb.9, at 8:15-8:45 (Science 2).
