Reminders

Swimming is on Monday.  Every child needs a swim cap.

The Julia Johnson workshop is on Wednesday.  If you would like to purchase one of her books, please send the correct amount (with the book title) in an envelope.

A calendar went home earlier in the month with a date that your child will re-tell a favorite book, sing a song or do a dance.  Please help them to pick what they would like to do and ensure that they are ready on their day.  These start on May 7th.

What We Did This Week

It was great to see you at the Student Led Conferences.  I was very proud of how the children took ownership of their learning and how well they could conduct the interviews.  This week we continued with The Three Billy Goats Gruff.  The children loved acting out this story!  They are doing a great job expressing themselves by using loud voices and changing their voices for each character.   We worked at centers on our acting skills, making characters and a setting and sharing portfolios (talking about their work with a friend).

What We Will Be Doing Next Week

Next week we will be reading many versions of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We will be playing many games which will be helping the children to express themselves.  At literacy centers, we will be working on beginning sounds, word families or reading.   At centers, we will be ordering stories, looking at beginning adding, sorting by size, measuring by weight and creating chairs for the 3 bears (STEM activity).  We will also be making porridge.

What We Did This Week

This week we started our new PYP unit—How We Express Ourselves!  We started the unit by reading a story –Caps for Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina.  I had the children draw a picture about the story and then re-tell it in their own words.  These are on our bulletin board outside our classroom.  We are working on our re-telling skills.  We also read The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.  At centers, the children had to put the pictures from this story in order and re-tell it in their own words.  They acted out the story with puppets and felt pictures.  We also worked on making ABC patterns, creating a butterfly with tissue paper and ordering the numbers from 1-20.  We also worked at literacy centers on sounds, rhyming, sounding out and blending or reading.  We had swimming on Monday.  Please remember to get a cap for the pool.

What’s Coming Up Next Week

Next week we will continue with The Very Hungry Caterpillar.  We will be making a class book based on this book, working on our writing skills, graphing and looking at beginning adding.  We will also be reading many versions of The Three Billy Goats Gruff.  The children will be acting out this story and doing many activities related to the book.   We will be playing charades and some games to help the children learn to express themselves.
