Reminders

Please label all school jackets clearly.  They ALL look the same. 🙂

On Wednesday, February 1st we will be going to the Grade 2 Musical Performance “Big Beautiful Planet”!  We will be going directly from the playground in the morning to the MPH so please be on time.

On February 5th, the children will attend an assembly where dentists will teach a short lesson about dental hygiene. Drs. Nicolas & Asp Centers will be conducting a free of charge dental screening for the children at Universal American School. This will be a visual screening/inspection and no dental X-rays will be taken.  It does not take the place of a regular examination in a dental office. Our class will have a quick visit to a classroom where the dentists will look over your child’s teeth on February 7th. This is a letter about the visit.  If you do NOT want your child to have the screening, you must print off the form and indicate that you do not want your child to have the screening.

What We Did This Week

This week we read The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson.  We retold the story with the characters, made a Gruffalo with play dough and made Gruffalo Crumble.  The children loved this activity as we used Gruffalo teeth (marshmallows), claws (rice krispies) and warts (chocolate chips).  As a class, we have been working on reading 3 letter words by sounding out each sound and then blending them together. We also did a goldfish graphing activity.  At centers, we played a math game where we focused on taking turns and following directions, practiced printing letters, experimented to see whether objects sink or float and sorted items by beginning sound. Dr. Amna and Ms. Daramola have started a Tasty Treat initiative.  It started this week with a banana/date smoothie.  The recipe was sent home on Wednesday; it is a great snack for you to make at home with your child.

What’s Coming Up Next Week

Next week will be starting our new PYP Unit—Sharing the Planet.  This is a great unit to make the children aware of the beauty of our world. We will be reading many versions of Jack and the Beanstalk and doing many activities related to this book.  We will be planting some seeds and doing some experiments with plants.  We will be attending the grade 2 musical on Wednesday.

Reminders

International Day is not on January 21st.  It has been moved to Match 15th.

I am going to a conference in Bahrain today at noon.  I will be back Sunday with a lot of great ideas for our class.

What We Did This Week

This week we did science experiments with gummy worms and pop rocks. At centers, we made edible patterns, played a 1 to 1 math game, sorted by the 5 senses, ordered numbers from 1-10 or 11-20 or 20+, represented numbers in many ways and created some art work based on Monet. We had outdoor centers on Thursday.  We explored instruments, played in the sandbox, played with bubbles in the water table and played bowling. At literacy centers the children worked on beginning sounds or rhyming and ending sounds.

What’s Coming Up Next Week

Next week, we will be reading The Gruffalo and doing many activities related to this book.   We will be cooking a special Gruffalo Crumble! At centers, we will be re-telling the story with characters, working on name writing (upper case for the first letter and lower case for the rest), working on letter recognition and writing, experimenting with things that sink and float and working on various literacy skills.

Reminders

International day will not be on January 21st.  It has been moved to March 15th.

Thursday, January 19th will be Santiago’s last day with us.  He and his family are moving back to the States.  We wish them all the best!  We will miss him a lot!

What We Did This Week

On Monday, we made slime. This was a very cool experiment where the change happens instantly.  The children were very excited about it.  I hope they told you all about it.   We also did an experiment called elephant toothpaste.  Please ask your child about this experiment.  We worked at centers throughout the week on developing our patterning skills.  Most children can now create and extend an AB pattern and are working on making more complex AAB, ABB and/or ABC patterns. At centers, we also worked on writing numbers, letter sounds, beginning sounds and literacy centers.   We have a new Ice Cream Shop in the Dramatic Play Room which the children loved playing in.  Dr.Amna and Nurse Hera came to teach the children the importance of washing their hands and proper hand washing techniques.   On Thursday, we had our field trip to Little Explorers.  This was a super fun (and tiring) trip! Check out all the photos on flikr.

What’s Coming Up Next Week

Next week we will be continuing to do a lot of experiments.  We will be doing an experiment with gummy bears, a coconut and rocks.  At centers, we will be creating art work, making edible patterns, ordering numbers, sorting by the 5 senses and representing numbers in different ways.  We will be working a lot at our literacy centers.   On Thursday, we will be starting outdoor centers.  These are centers where we can allow to the children to be loud and develop their gross motor skills. We will be doing these each week now that the weather is perfect!

Below is the Early Childhood Birthday Policy to read over as we have many birthdays coming up.

If you wish, your child may bring in cupcakes for the class on his/her birthday. Please make arrangements a week in advance, so I can give you the exact number of children in the class and set aside some time for the treat. We have reusable plates, cups and utensils in the classroom.  If you provide juice, please buy the large containers. No siblings or friends from other classes will be allowed.  This is a time to have a small celebration with your child’s classmates – it is not your child’s birthday party.  If you would like to give treat bags to the class, they must not contain any candy or chocolate.  Some good ideas are books, markers, note pads, stickers, etc.  Horns/ blowers are not permitted. We are also not allowed to light candles inside the classrooms.

The field trip to Little Explorers on January 12th.  The permission slip and money was due on the 5th.  Please send it in if you have not already done so.  The children will wear their blue KG1 shirts on this day.

What We Did This Week

It is great to be back and start the new year.  I hope you all had a great holiday. We read the book The Mitten by Jan Brett and made the characters for this book so the children can re-tell it in their own words.  Re-telling stories is a great first step in learning how to read.  We also acted out the story with masks and next week we will make a new class book based on this book.  We read Shark in Park and then made telescopes and went on a walk to see all the things we can see.  We explored our sense of touch and worked on new vocabulary to talk about how things feel. At centers, we wrote and stamped our names, explored patterns, sorted by the 5 senses, played a sound game and made glitter bottles. We reviewed the letter sounds we have learned and worked on blending sounds together.

What is Coming Up Next Week

On Monday, we will be doing a cool experiment and the children will be drawing pictures and discussing what changes took place. At centers, we will be working on experimenting with items that sink or float, making textured patterns, letter identification, playing math games and creating a painting like Monet.  We will be doing literacy centers and going on a listening walk.   On Thursday, we will go on our field trip to Little Explorers!
