Reminders

Oct.31st is a Halloween Dress up Day.  There will be a parade at 8:05 out on the Elementary playground.

Thanks for the incredible treats for Halloween.  The children are going to be so excited to receive such great treats!!

What We Did This Week

We started our pumpkin investigation by having different pumpkins on tables for the children to explore.  I recorded their comments and observations.  On Monday we predicted whether a pumpkin would sink or float.  The children made a graph of what they predicted and then we tested it.  Ask your child if a pumpkin sinks or floats? We also measured various pumpkins in groups with unifix cubes and predicted how many seeds were inside.  We later counted them – there were 231!!  I roasted some for the children to try (they all loved them).  At centers we did a lot of centers related to math concepts – counting 1 to 1, number recognition and quantifying numbers.  We also used IPads to learn letter sounds. practiced cutting and played a spider game.   We planted pumpkin seeds in our classroom and are observing what happens to a cut open pumpkin over time.  We also made bread in  a slow cooker.

What’s Coming Up Next Week

Next week will be a fun week as we will be celebrating Halloween! We will be making some Halloween crafts, carving a face on our pumpkin, learning some Halloween songs AND Trick or Treating. We will be reading many Halloween books and making a class book of scary things. Three parents will be coming in on Sunday to do Halloween centers with the children.  The children will be participating in a parade at 8:05 on Monday morning.  The parents are welcome to line up outside on the Elementary playground to watch the parade.  At centers we will be looking at patterns, sorting, practicing letter formation, making a “me” craft, working at literacy centers and working with 10 frames.

Just a sad note that Devin moved back to China last weekend and will no longer be in our class.

Reminders

We will have our last swimming class on Sunday.  I know it was a very short session but it was the only time we could get.

Please check your child’s shorts from Sunday’s swimming class.  Charlie has his name in his shorts but someone else wore them home.  I have the other shorts here at school.  PLEASE label all of your child’s items.  I am trying to get the children to be responsible for their own clothes.  When they take them off, they need to put them in their bags.  This is the same when they are getting dressed after swimming.  They need to put their bathing suit, towel, etc. in their own bag.

What We Did This Week

This week we went on a shape walk around the school and we made shapes with marshmallows and toothpicks.  We talked about ways we can make our friends feel happy and are continuing to talk about all the nice things we see in class and on the playground.  At centers we worked on sorting objects by letter sound, matching upper and lower case letters, creating our names with natural objects and our pincher grip.

What’s Coming Up Next Week

Next week we will be starting our pumpkin investigation.  We will be doing many observations and experiments with pumpkins. We will be exploring the outside and inside, planting seeds, carving a pumpkin and making something with pumpkin (we will vote to see what we would like to make). At centers we will be working on recognizing numbers, counting 1 to 1, cutting and beginning sounds.

Reminders

There is no school on October 19th and 20th for teacher professional development.

The Literature bags need to be returned on Sunday.  Please take the time to make sure that all items are in the bag.  Your child will not be allowed to take home a new bag until the bag and all of the items from the bag are returned.

Swimming is on Sunday.  Please make sure your child has a swim hat.  Please continue to have your child practice getting dressed by themselves.

We have a Halloween dress up on October 31st.  Your child will wear a costume to school on this day.  There are no guns, knives or swords allowed and please try to not have anything too scary.

What We Did This Week

This week we looked at the art work of Kandinsky and modelled his art work.  The children made beautiful pictures based on his work. We read two books about names – Tikki Tikki Tembo and Chrysanthemum.  In the story Tikki Tikki Tembo, the boy had 50 letters in his name.  In pairs we counted how many letters we have in each of our names and made a graph of the results.  Gabriella has the longest name! At centers the children worked on representing the numbers from 1-10, finding letters that are in our names and letters that are not in our names, making name towers, playing a shape swatting game, going on a color scavenger hunt and cutting.  We read a great called Have You Filled a Bucket Today? We talked about all the ways we can make our friends feel good (fill their buckets) or make them feel bad (be a bucket dipper). I am trying to take note of and focus on all of the kind acts we see each day at school.

What Is Coming Up Next Week

Next week is a short week of school.  We will be modelling and role playing scenarios from the book Have You Filled a Bucket Today. We will be practicing ways we can tell our friends if we are not happy about something they are doing and what we can say if we would like a turn with something. At centers we will be working on letter sounds and identifying things that begin with a certain letter, matching upper and lower case letters, sorting items by any attribute and making our names with natural items.  We will be swimming on Sunday.

Thank you so much for all your support for the box appeal.  It is amazing how much the children were involved with this and how much they care about helping the workers.

Everyone brought in something for the workers!

Some of the children helped me pack the boxes during Free Inquiry.

We filled 7 boxes!!!!!

All items for the box appeal must be sent in by Sunday, October 9th. Please remember that I am trying to teach the children that they can help others so make sure they go with you when you go shopping.  I thank you all for your support with this initiative.

Library books are due on Thursdays.  Please remember to send them in as the children are very disappointed when they cannot take a book out.

What We Did This Week

This week we read Ten Apples Up On Top and 10 Red Apples.  We are working on group reading where the children follow the pattern of the story and start “talking like the book”.  We made a class book based on Ten Apples Up on Top and reenacted it with magnetic story pieces.  On Wednesday the children brought in apples.  We sorted them in different ways, had a taste test (“the green apples burn my mouth!”), saw if apples sink or float, cut open an apple to see the magic star inside, made a graph of our favorite kind of apple and made applesauce.  Most children did not like the applesauce.  At centers this week we worked on sorting real items by shape, creating faces with natural materials, 1 to 1 counting, 3 apple math games and friend Bingo.  This week we worked on the children listening the first time I ask them to do something.  This is a great thing to be working on at home as well.

What’s Coming Up Next Week

Next week we will be reading Tikki Tikki Tembo and Chrysanthemum which are books about names.  We will be looking at the first letter of our names and the sounds they make.  At centers we will be going on a color scavenger hunt, sorting letters that are in our names and letters that are not in our names, cutting, making name towers, playing 2 fine motor games and playing a shape swatting game.  We will be looking at the artist – Kandinsky and making pictures based on his art work.  We will also be going on a shape hunt around the school and building shapes with toothpicks and marshmallows.

We have swimming on Sunday.
