Reminders

School ends at 11:45 on June 20th.

Happy Father’s Day on June 18th!!

What We Did This Week

On Sunday, the children had Moving Up Day where they visited 3 KG2 classrooms.  They learned about the expectations for KG2, read a book, learned a counting to 100 song and did some table top activities. Mr. Fields came in to do a lesson on feelings about moving up to KG2.  We worked on our literacy skills and practiced reading and spelling cvc words, played some adding games, made a retell for 5 Little Monkeys, made some things for Father’s Day and drew and wrote about the villains in the fairy tales we have read.  On Thursday, we found all the upper case letters hidden around the room and colored in the corresponding lower case letter when we found it.

What’s Coming Up Next Week

Next week is the last week of school.  It’s hard to believe!!  We will be making puppets to retell the elephant and piggie stories we have read, we will draw and tell about our favorite things in KG1 and do some literacy centers and adding games.

Reminders

School ends at 11:20. Many parents are picking up their children 15-20 minutes late.  Please be on time.  Thanks!

The last day of school is on June 20th.  School will end at 11:45 on this day.

I am moving back to Canada after 10 years at UAS.  This has been my home and where my children have grown up.  One of my favorite things about being here for so long is seeing the students I have taught growing up over the years.  I would love it if you kept in contact with me – my personal email address is jenmemjayali@gmail.com.

Thank you so much for your gift!!  I really appreciate it. I plan on buying a special painting with it that will remind me of my time here.  I will post a picture next week!!

What We Did This Week

This week we learned the song There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly.  The children made a craft so they can retell this song as well as drew and wrote about what they think the old lady ate.  At literacy centers, the children worked at sorting by beginning sound, writing cvc words or reading. We also retold Little Red Riding Hood in our own words and put the pictures from the story in order.

What’s Coming Up Next Week

On Sunday, the children will have a Moving Up Day.  They will go to three KG2 classes to see what next year is going to be like.  We will be making some things for Father’s Day, finding the alphabet hidden around the room, participating in literacy centers and doing some adding.   There are no more swimming classes.

Reminders

Yearbooks are available at the school store for 200dhs.

If you bring your child late, you must go to attendance to sign them in.  I cannot change the system once I have marked them absent.

All library books must be returned this Thursday.

What We Did This Week

This week we read many versions of The Little Read Hen.  The children drew AND wrote about how they help at home.  They also acted out this story in groups.  They are doing amazing jobs acting out stories, remembering their lines and using different voices for the characters.  We read Pete’s Four Groovy Buttons and looked at beginning subtraction.  The children had to tell stories about Pete’s button.  We used the language, “How many are left?”  We had literacy centers where the children worked on beginning, middle or ending sounds, reading cvc words or reading BOB books.

What’s Coming Up Next Week

Next week we will be learning the song There Was An Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly.  We will be reading different versions of this song and doing many activities related to it.  At centers we will be working at literacy centers, making some things for Father’s Day, continuing to work on beginning subtraction and putting pictures from a story in order and retelling the story in their own words.

Reminders

Ramadan hours will begin on May 28th.  For Pre-K and Kg1 the hours will be from 8:30-11:20. Supervision on our small EC playground will start at 8:10 during Ramadan. If you drop your child off before this time, you will be responsible for their supervision.  The buses will depart at 11:30 and After School Care kids go straight to the room and will be dismissed at 1:30 with the rest of the school.

See the school’s message about Ramadan.

We have swimming on Monday.

What We Did This Week

This week we read many versions of The Three Little Pigs.  Our favorite was The Three Little Wolves and The Big Bad Pig.  At centers, we worked on building a house that will not fall down when the wolf blows on it, letter formation, number identification, identifying how many syllables in a word and acting out stories.  We had FUN DAY on Tuesday.  Thank you to Shana’s, Adam’s, Charlie’s, Omar’s and Isabella’s Mom for sending in treats for us.  We had fun playing outside with the hose and playing Duck, Duck Squirt.

What’s Coming Up Next Week

Next week we will be reading The Little Red Hen.  We will be acting out this story, drawing about how we help at home and making our own Little Red Hen books.  We will also be looking at beginning subtraction and working at literacy centers.  We have 4 weeks left of school and it is important that your child continues to behave in a principled manner.  Please talk to your child about continuing to follow the classroom rules especially with listening the first time, listening to the TA and using an indoor voice. It is becoming a problem in the class that a few children need the rules repeated to them many times a day.

Memory book orders are due by May 22nd. (See previous blog post on May 11th about this)

What We Did This Week

This week we continued with our performances.  The children are doing a wonderful job; I am so proud of them. Mr. Fields came to our class on Sunday to talk about the importance of listening and talking about our feelings.  We worked on drawing with detail and writing using inventive spelling.  Inventive spelling is a key skill in learning to read and write.  At centers, we played adding and subtracting games, drew pictures of how we can be caring friends, made puppets, played rhyming games and created the setting for the 3 Pigs story.

What’s Coming Up Next Week

We will be continuing with The Three Little Pigs and reading some mixed up fairy tales.  At centers, we will be creating a house that the wolf will not be able to blow down, acting out the 3 Pigs story with props, working on their understanding of 1 more and 1 less, sorting pictures by the number of syllables they have and creating number stories for their friends to solve.

We will have fun day on Tuesday.  Please wear swim suits under the shorts and blue colored Kg1 t-shirts.  Please send in a towel, sun hat and swim shoes as well.

Please ensure that you include it in the envelope if you are providing new art work.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the American, Canadian, Pakistani and Filipino mothers!

This will be the last week for the literature bags.  We have been through the rotations and most kids have taken home almost every bag!

If you want a copy of your child’s performance, please send in a flash drive.  They are too big for me to send.

What We Did This Week

This week we read many versions of Little Red Riding Hood.   We re-told this story in our own words, acted it out, sorted characters that are in the book and not in the book and compared the different versions we read. At centers, we worked on building words and identifying the beginning, middle and ending sounds, finding the missing number in a sequence, using 2 color blocks to make many combinations of a number (2 red and 3 yellow, 1 red, 4 yellow, etc. all make 5) and creating patterns. We worked on beginning adding stories.  I am not expecting the children to learn the adding tables; I am expecting them to understand the concept that when we add more the number gets bigger.  The language we are using in the classroom is, “How many do we have all together?”  On Wednesday, a guy from Science Made Fun came in to do some science activities with the children related to the 5 senses.  We read a version of Little Red Riding Hood where the wolf does not want to eat Little Red Riding Hood but wants to eat what she has in her basket (wheat berry muffins).  We followed the recipe in the book and made this special treat.    On Thursday, we watched the Hag El Leila parade and two moms came in to pass out treats to the class.

What’s Coming Up Next Week

Next week, we will be reading many versions of The Three Little Pigs.  At centers, we will be making puppets, playing some literacy games, creating adding stories, playing adding and subtracting games, working on number recognition and drawing about how we can be caring and principled.  Mr. Fields will be coming to do a counselling lesson.
