14th December, 2017

Hi Moms and Dads,

It has been a whirlwind of a trimester! Thank you all so much for your support so far this year. It has been very busy with field trips, activities, national day, Eid and now the early holidays. We hope that 2018 will be as productive.

In January we will finish our science unit ‘How the World Works’ and we will begin a new unit in the middle of January which will be ‘How We Express Ourselves.’ In this unit students will be learning about expression through art.

The children will be going to Ecoventure camp on 13th February until 15th February. If you want your child to attend the camp there is a google form that needs to be filled in please find the link here

The itinerary is here Grade 5 Itinerary at Ecoventure Camp. The cost of the trip is 1575 AED and should be paid into the accounts department. When you pay for the camp can you please tell the accounts department:

  1. Name of your child
  2. Class your child is in
  3. Payment is for Grade 5 Ecoventure camp

The kit list for the camp is on the last page of the itinerary. Have your child read through it carefully and see which items they already have. Your child will be expected to pack and be responsible for all of their own belongings so it will be be best to just pack the necessary items rather than any extra things.

You are encouraged to sign up and pay the accounts department by the end of January.

Have a wonderful holiday and a happy new year. Merry Christmas to those of you who celebrate.

Grade 5 Team.

Christmas Movie Night

UAS highschool will host a movie night for elementary and middle school children on Thursday, 7th December at 3.30 until 5.45pm. Children will need to be picked up afterwards from the secondary library.

If you would like your child to attend please fill in the permission slip for movie night.

Then your child should return it to their homeroom teacher by tomorrow.

Thanks,

Grade 5 Team

Thursday, 16th November

Hi there,

Hope you are all having a relaxing weekend. Thanks to all the moms, dads and guardians that came to our parents’ conferences over the last few days. It is wonderful to see how supported our students are in their learning careers. Over the last few days I have put up a number of posts about different things – skiing trip over spring break, the PTSO Thanksgiving dinner and Junior Scorpions track and field registration and details. These are all contained in previous. See the link to the post about track and field here

In math this week children will begin to revise all of the concepts from Unit 2. This was heavy unit with some revision from last year but also estimate and multiplication of decimals. The children should use their pretests to help them review what they have learnt. Later in the week we will begin Unit 3 which is a mainly geometry unit about angles and shapes.

In Readers’ Workshop the children will begin a new unit which is all about tackling complexity in nonfiction texts. Some classes finished their book clubs last week and had celebrations to mark the occasion. There will be book clubs again later in the year. This week the children will get to meet our visiting author Ying Chang Compestine who has written several books – fiction and nonfiction. Children were given order forms if they wish to purchase any of her books. Our visiting author will also conduct some writing workshops with all of the Grade 5 classes, we are very lucky to get this opportunity. In our Writers’ Workshop lessons this week children will be beginning to plan their information book/website about their chosen animal.

In our unit of inquiry lessons this week children will continue to do mystery science investigations. Last week we all had a lot of fun figuring out how to find out if something is an acid or not. Children also got to test mystery liquids.

Important Dates:

November 19th – PTSO Thanksgiving dinner 3.30pm in the cafeteria

Class photos – Wednesday 22nd November and Thursday 23rd November (please remind your child to wear their shirt with the collar on the day their class will get their photo taken)

Thanks,

Grade 5 Team.

Saturday, 28th October

Thanks so much to all the moms, dads, brothers, sisters and friends that came to watch the Halloween Parade at UAS on Thursday morning. The children really enjoyed their ‘paparazzi’ moment in the spotlight. We had a great Halloween celebration in Grade 5. In my class, the children listened to some hair raising stories and then told me some of their own stories. In Miss Schricker’s class the children learnt how to write Halloween madlibs. In Mr. Yates’ class the children made mini catapults in order to get candy into a jar as part of a STEM activity. All the Grade 5 class had a little party in the afternoon. Thanks again to the moms and dads and families that donated items to the class, it was very much appreciated by everyone.

This week …..

Well, it’s going to be a short week as the children do not have school on Sunday and Monday due to teachers’ professional development time. The children return to school at the normal time of 7.40am on Tuesday, 31st October. We hope they have a relaxing and fun long weekend. Don’t forget to remind your child to fill out their Dubai Fitness Challenge booklet over the long weekend – it’s a perfect time and temperature for them to get out and do some exercise.

Language Arts

This week the children will finish their personal narrative writing unit. They will work towards writing the final draft of their stories and then publishing their work. In Readers’ Workshop children will continue to read their novels in their book clubs and work towards being able to write an interpretation of their book.

Math

Children will continue with Unit 2 which focuses on addition and subtraction of decimal numbers including money. There is a large problem solving aspect to this unit – children will solve one and two step problems. Children will also revise how to round decimals and then make estimates for decimal multiplication.

Unit of Inquiry

Children will begin their new unit which is a science based unit under the theme ‘How the World Works.’
