Dear Parents,

 

Students thoroughly enjoyed the field trip yesterday and many of them have been inspired to read Tom Gates and other books.

 

Dates to Remember:

  • February 2nd – 6th: Literacy Week (see information below)
  • February 16th: Professional Development Day – No school for students
  • February 27th: Sports Day 

 

Literacy Week

 

Dress-Up

We will be celebrating Literacy Week next week. Students are allowed to wear the following each day:

  • Sunday – Tshirt with words
  • Monday – “Reading is My SuperPower” Tshirt
  • Tuesday – Headpiece or hat that represents a book character
  • Wednesday –  “Reading is My SuperPower” Tshirt
  • Thursday – Book character costume (Please note there will not be a parade this year. Students will have the chance to show off their costumes at the assembly.)

 

Competitions

  • Tuesday
    • Deadline to submit for the following competitions
      • Potato competition – students must submit their dressed-up potatoes for judging on Tuesday (see below as an example for inspiration)
      • A story about sports or fitness to Mr. Mac
      • A rap/chat/short song to Ms. Austin
      • A poster of your invented superhero to Ms. Alina

 

Other Events

  • Monday – Moms and Muffins (7:55 – 8:10) – mothers are invited to come in and read with their children in class during this time.
  • Wednesday – Dads and Donuts (7:55 – 8:10)- dads are invited to come in and read with their child in class during this time.

 

Curriculum

  • Reading – students will continue building on their skills as nonfiction readers by responding to nonfiction texts and beginning to recognize opinion from facts.
  • Writing – students will work on finishing their writing and publishing of their expository texts. 
  • Math- We will wrap up our unit surrounding rounding, and multi-digit adding and subtracting and students will take the post-assessment on Monday. We will move onto Unit 4, Measurement & Fractions and Number Corner will focus on Area and Perimeter. 
  • Unit of Inquiry: We are moving into learning about the Engineering Design Process, by inquiring into the current wildfire situation in Australia. Moving forward, students will inquire into a topic they are hoping to develop a solution to, and use the engineering design process to develop a prototype of the solution they are proposing.
