Blog Update January 23rd 2020

Dear 3rd Grade Parents,

We have had a fantastic week of school. Students have completed their Math and Reading MAP tests and we will continue with Science next week. Make-up dates will be arranged for students who have missed any MAP testing sessions. It was great to see such growth with many students and we look forward to students continuing to grow as the year progresses. Remember, the biggest way for students to make progress in MAP testing is continuing to read actively and consistently.

A friendly reminder for all students to ensure they bring a reusable water bottle to school. For PE, students are working through a track and field unit, and are required to have their bottles filled and with them during this time.

Dates to Remember:

  • January 26th: (revised date) Report cards “go live” for parents
  • January 27th: Science MAP test
  • January 29th: Field Trip to Tom Gates at Mall of the Emirates
  • February 2nd – 6th: Book Week
  • February 16th: Professional Development Day – No school for students
  • February 27th: Sports Day

Curriculum:

Reading: Students are well on their way to practicing their skills to become better nonfiction readers. We have been actively working on recognizing text features that authors use to help set readers up for success. Next week, we will continue to explore nonfiction texts by setting goals for ourselves, and taking our understanding further by recognizing what we’ve learned so far and what we still need to learn.

Writing: We will continue our expert writing by adding text features and more interesting information to our writing.

Math: We will continue to practice solving multi-step number stories, rounding and triple-digit addition and subtraction strategies. In number corner, we are exploring fractions and elapsed time.

Unit of Inquiry:  We are learning about the Engineering Design Process through inquiring into the wildfires in Australia, and engineering ways to reforest the area, once the fires have been extinguished. This will allow students to learn about engineering through the lens of solving problems on the planet.

Homework & new Spelling and vocab words will be sent home on Sunday morning.

Have a lovely weekend,

The Grade 3 Team
