Good evening Grade 2 Parents & Caregivers,

We have successfully completed another week of e-Learning! 

This week we continued our UOI unit, which is ‘Embracing Change’. It was wonderful to be able to see the videos and posters submitted to show how to stay safe and healthy in our community. Great job to all the students who posted on Padlet.  In reading and writing, students continued to explore different types of poetry.  Students were able to look at cinquain and diamante poems. In math, students relooked at solving word problems and what it means to add and subtract. We looked at how to determine whether to add or subtract in a problem. We also learned about synonyms and antonyms and how you can use these in poetic writing.

Parent/ Teacher Conferences

Island Adventure Week-

During the week of June 21-25 we will be holding parent-teacher conferences via zoom. You should have received a link from your teacher to sign up for a time.  During the last week of school, students will participate in Island Adventure Week.  Each day there will be a google slide that has a list of activities the students can participate in. There will be no live zoom lessons for all classes during this week. We will be having a whole class party on the official last day of school. Our class parties will be on zoom. They will take place on Thursday 25th June at 11: 30 am. 

Learning Activities:

Just a reminder that on the powerpoint you will find a section of must do activities. These assignments must be completed by the students. At the end of the powerpoint there will be a choice board of may do activities for the week. These are optional tasks for early finishers or students who want extra work. A range of academic and engaging activities are provided weekly for our learners.

Good evening Grade 2 Parents & Caregivers,

We have successfully completed another week of e-Learning! 

This week we continued our UOI unit, which is ‘Embracing Change’. It was wonderful to be able to see the videos that were submitted. In reading and writing, students explored poetry and looked at similarities and differences between different poetic writing. They also started writing acrostic and haiku poems. In math, we continued to give students exposure to fractions and they were able to make their own pizzas.  We also worked on irregular plural nouns. 

Learning Objectives:

  • I can solve  addition and subtraction  story problems.

Ms. Sarina will be holding a social time for second grade students on Thursday’s from 11:30-12:00. She will have some games, activities, and talk time for the students to participate in. It will be great if learners take part in this opportunity to socialize with students from across our grade level.

Weekly Updates: May 24th to June 4th

 

Wish you all a very blessed and happy Eid!!! 

The school will be closed this coming week until May 26th and we will be back to our learning and teaching on Wednesday the 27th. Please note that we will continue with the Ramadan schedule and the whole class zoom meeting will be at 11:30am, Sunday through Wednesday.

This week our students worked on recognizing few parts of a poem and have a deeper understanding about it. In math, we focused on measurement with an emphasis on using a ruler accurately and measuring in centimeters and also got introduced to the concept fo fractions. In UOI, we are observing the changes around us and learning to embrace it and looking at the positive changes. We also want to congratulate the the second graders for independently doing their reading assessment on Raz-Plus.  Very well done indeed!

Raz-Plus & Matific:

Good evening Grade 2 Parents & Caregivers,

We have successfully completed another week of e-Learning! 

Thank you to all parents and learners for your kind words during Teacher Appreciation Week. It has been an absolute pleasure reading such thoughtful comments. 

This week we started on our new UOI, which is ‘Embracing Change’. Students expressed their thoughts and shared their personal ideas in relation to change. It was wonderful to be able to see our learners think about the past and current situation and personalize their responses. In reading and writing, students explored poetry and looked at similarities and differences between different poetic writing. In math, we focused on measurement with an emphasis on using a ruler accurately and measuring in centimeters. We ended math this week with our first mini Olympics. It was great to see the enthusiasm and participation of our students.

Raz Kids Plus:

We have a new trial subscription for Raz Kids Plus. This is an engaging learning resource that we will be using for reading. Due to the current situation, it is difficult to be able to conduct face to face reading assessments with our learners. This week, we will be using Raz Kids Plus to assign a reading task to your child. They will be required to complete a recorded read aloud, followed by comprehension questions. Please note that this is to be completed independently. We will really appreciate your support in regards to helping us make professional judgments for our students.

Hello Grade 2 Parents & Caregivers,

Another week of e-learning is successfully completed! We really appreciate your support through these unusual times.

Last week the students continued to study nonfiction in both reading and writing. Students were able to share their expertise over the ecosystem that they researched.  We were impressed with the projects that the students completed and the knowledge that they were able to share with each other. In math, students continued to work finding the area of shapes using not only pattern blocks, but geoboards as well.  We had a great end to our ecosystem unit and will be starting a new unit this upcoming week all around the idea of  embracing change.  We will also be exploring and writing different poetry by understanding their structure and features.

Learning Objectives: Here is a list of the learning objectives for our students this week.

  • I can identify similarities and differences in poetry.
  • I can skip count by 10’s and 100’s starting at different numbers.
  • I can estimate and measure objects using centimeters.
  • I can identify nouns, verbs, and adjectives in a sentence.

The grade 2 live zoom lessons are going to be 11:30 to 12:15 Sunday to Wednesday.

Last week the students continued working on their skills mainly focused on reading, math, phonics and grammar. In math, we looked at finding the area of a shape using geometric shapes. In reading, they learned how good readers stop and ask questions when they read to better understand the text. Students finished their ecosystem project and created something to show what they have learned.

  • I can identify and describe verbs and adverbs
  • I can identify and write words with a double consonant.
  • I can answer questions about a nonfiction text.

Weekly Update: 19th – 23rd April

Hello Grade 2 Parents & Caregivers,

Another week of e-learning is successfully completed! We really appreciate your support through these unusual times.

***Please note that we will be following the Ramadan schedule from April 26th until May 23rd and the school timings will be 10am to 3pm. The grade 2 live zoom lesson is going to be 11:30 to 12:15 Sunday to Wednesday.

Last week the students continued working on their skills mainly focused on reading, math, phonics and grammar. In math, students looked at the similarities and differences between different shapes and were seen using the Venn Diagram effectively.In reading, they learned how good readers not just pay attention to the texts in non-fiction books but also notice the various ways an author makes the book interesting for their audience.

Learning Objectives: Here is a list of the learning objectives for our students this week.

I can statements:

  • I can think about the information that I am reading.
  • I can compose and decompose shapes.
  • I can identify and describe common and proper nouns.
  • I can identify and write long vowels ending with the silent e
  • I can create my final product about my ecosystem.
  • I can present my project clearly.

Ecosystem Research:

Our students have come to an end of the researching phase for UOI. This week, they will be exploring a way to showcase their research. Students may choose to do this through a variety of ways.  On Sunday, they will begin to plan out how they want to showcase their information.  We will provide some examples to get them thinking.  A rubric will be provided to students so that they are able to see what they will be assessed on. This will be a great resource to use for guidance and as a checkpoint.  Students will have two weeks to work on the project. The final project will be turned in on Wednesday, April 29th.

Weekly Update – 12th to 16th April

Hi Parents & Caregivers,

We have successfully completed 4 weeks of E-learning. We would like to thank all parents, siblings and caregivers who have taken the time to work alongside their child ensuring they support them in this new, yet exciting learning journey. Our students continued to develop their skills further in nonfiction texts as this corresponds well with the Unit of Inquiry. In reading, students learned about using context clues to find the meaning of unknown words. They engaged in phonics and grammar tasks which focused on developing knowledge of sentences and vowels. Students also continued researching their chosen ecosystem and created a detailed diagram to present their learning. In math, students recapped on their knowledge of two-dimensional shapes and explored quadrilateral shapes. It was a joy seeing the creatures our students created with their shapes!

  • I can describe ways the author keeps readers interested. 
  • I can identify and describe attributes of three-dimensional shapes.
  • I can compare and contrast attributes of 2D and 3D shapes.

  • I can start creating a final product that showcases my research about an ecosystem.

Hi Parents & Caregivers,

This week was another successful week of e-Learning with the start of live sessions on Zoom. It was wonderful to be able to interact with our kids virtually.  We look forward to continuing this learning on Zoom. Our students continued to develop strategies when reading nonfiction text and writing complete sentences, using correct sentence structure. Students continued to be engaged in their ecosystem research projects.  We had some great discussions about what they have learned so far and look forward to another discussion this week! During math, students continued to expand upon and review their knowledge of place value and American money.

Learning Objectives: This week students will continue to engage in learning objectives that will have a focus on nonfiction.  We will also be starting a new math unit with a focus on geometry.

I can statements:

  • I can use context clues to find the meaning of unfamiliar words.
  • I can identify and describe attributes of two- dimensional shapes.
  • I can identify and describe quadrilaterals and different types of triangles.
  • I can conduct research over my chosen ecosystem.
  • I can read and write words using phonetic knowledge.

Ecosystem Research:

Each student will have a live lesson with Ms Prideaux or Ms. Brenda once a week based on the ecosystem they chose. During this time students will collaborate with each other over their ecosystem. This will be a time to add more information to their research. Links for these Zoom meetings will be posted on the daily powerpoint. Weekly Update- April 2nd

Hi Parents & Caregivers,

This week we had another exciting week of E-Learning. We can see the efforts our students are putting towards their learning and the continuous support from you all. During reading, writing and UOI, our students engaged in learning tasks that focused on nonfiction texts with an emphasis on informational writing. We hope to continue to provide our students with integrated learning tasks. They also learned about American money and how to solve word problems related to currency. 

New Schedule:

Starting next week, we will be doing synchronized learning with our students. We will be teaching live lessons Sunday-Wednesday from 11:00 to 11:45 a.m. Students will receive a zoom link from their teacher, which they will be able to click to be a part of the live lesson. Please make sure students are ready and present at that time, as we will be starting promptly. 

Ecosystem Research:

Each student will have a live lesson with Ms Prideaux once a week based on the ecosystem they chose. During this time students will collaborate with each other over their ecosystem. Math test:

During our Wednesday live math session students will be taking the test. Students need paper and a pencil. During this time, we want to see what the students can do independently. We will be conducting the test live so that we are able to provide the necessary support for our learners.
