Grade 2 Newsletter, April 14 – 18


For the coming week…


  • Have a lovely spring break. Safe travels to those who are spending time outside Dubai. Homework over the break is optional; however, students should continue to read daily for 20 minutes.
  • April 21st will be a professional development day for teachers. There will be no school for students.
  • This session’s ASAs will run until the end of April.
  • Ramadan is expected to start May 5th. When we receive the official announcement from KHDA, school hours are planned as 8:30 – 1:30 daily.

This week in Readers’ Workshop: Bigger books mean amping up reading.

Classwork Homework suggestion
Sunday Students will review the routines of Readers’ Workshop. Students can practice the reading skills using RAZkids, library books, class book shopping books or other books they have at home.

Please allow your child to choose what to read as it promotes enjoyment of reading which will help them become lifelong readers.

IXL Language Arts: V.1

Monday Students will work on fluency and comprehension skills in extension groups.
Tuesday Students will work on retelling the story with key ideas and author’s message.
Wednesday Students will work on fluency and comprehension skills in extension groups.
Thursday Students will assess their reading development by thinking about their reading habits.


This week in Writers’ Workshop, Persuasive writing:

Sunday Students will write about their spring break using a small moment format. Students can practice persuasive writing at home using ideas they are passionate about (Should Grade 2 students have mobile phones? Should Grade 2 students have extra recess time at school? etc.)

IXL Language Arts:

Subject-Verb Agreement, SS.1, SS.2

Monday Students will look at the parts of a book review in order to review a book for a friend.
Tuesday We are learning to include information relevant to the reader as we write a restaurant review.
Wednesday Students will review a movie without giving the story away.
Thursday Students will learn to identify the subject and predicate.

Sunday Students will learn to make a pictograph about how many pockets students have. IXL, Addition, I.3, I.5

Monday Students will solve math puzzle using magic squares.
Tuesday We are learning to reorder numbers to make them easier to add.
Wednesday Students will practice ballpark estimates in the hundreds place.
Thursday Students will review using Edmentum.


Unit of Inquiry

Grade 2 will begin our Sharing the Planet Unit, Animal and Plant Survival in their Habitats. Students will get an introduction to different habitats and think about the different plants and animals that live in each. We will be asking students to consider a particular plant or animal they would like to research within the teacher’s chosen habitat. They will become the “class expert” on that plant or animal.
