For the coming week…

Reminders

  • Mark this date in your calendar! The Grade 1 and 2 Musical will be March 19th at 8h30 in the MPH. Parents and grandparents invited.
  • There will be an assembly Thursday, Feb. 7th. Student in 2DO should wear a yellow t-shirt that day, 2BC should wear a purple t-shirt, and 2KG should wear a green t-shirt.
  • Thank you to those of you who have send in earbuds or headphones for our Edmentum program. If you haven’t had a chance to send them in, please try to get them this week. Nothing expensive. 
  • ASAs continue this week. This session’s ASAs will run until the end of April.
  • MAP testing continues this week. Students will write MAP Language Usage on Monday, Feb. 4. Any unfinished tests will be done during make-up sessions. Students should get 9-10 hours sleep the night before each test and eat healthily each day to prepare for the tests.
  • Sports Day will be Feb. 28th for Grades 2. Students in 2DO should wear a yellow t-shirt that day, 2BC should wear a purple t-shirt, and 2KG should wear a green t-shirt.

Literacy

This week in Readers’ Workshop, Becoming Experts, Reading Non-fiction:

Sunday Students will be learning to use the non-fiction features to understand the text. Students can practice the reading skills using RAZkids, library books, class book shopping books or other books they have at home. Please allow your child to choose what to read as it promotes enjoyment of reading which will help them become life-long readers.
Monday Students will looking at text boxes and labels.
Tuesday We are learning to use the glossary to understand the text.
Wednesday Students will combine strategies to figure out keywords.
Thursday Students will review skills learned this week.

 

This week in Writers’ Workshop, Lab Reports:

Sunday Students will write a small moment story about their weekend building independence as writers. Students can practice these writing skills by writing about non-fiction science books, making notes about their learning and writing about science experiments.
Monday We are learning to reflect on our hypothesis.
Tuesday Students will ask questions about our experiment results.
Wednesday Students will think of possible explanations for their results.
Thursday Students will review skills learned in the week.

Students can use IXL Language Skills to support literacy. This week, students can do R-Controlled Vowels, I.3, I.4.

 

Math

Sunday Students will use Base10 blocks to build a number. Students can practice this skill on IXL, Place Value, M.2 and M.9.
Monday We are learning to measure using feet and meters. Students can practice this skill on IXL, Measurement, S.3.
Tuesday Students will measure in inches and centimeters. Students can practice this skill on IXL, Measurement, S.8.
Wednesday Students will use Edmentum practicing skills at their level. Students can practice this skill on IXL or using the login for Edmentum at home. (stuck to homework folder)
Thursday Review of skills learned this week.

 

Unit of Inquiry

In UOI, students will continue conducting experiments in our Matter unit. Students enjoyed freezing liquids and observing how quickly/slowly water evaporates in our classroom. Students will continue to use measurement, lab reports and non-fiction reading as they do two new experiments to help them understand how the world around them works.
