Grade 2 Newsletter, Nov. 11 – 15


For the coming week…


  • Grade 5 Market Day will be Sunday, Nov. 11. Students can bring 10 aed or so to spend on small items during lunch recess.
  • The Dojo website is experiencing some problems communicating with the Etisalat server. If you use Dojo to communicate with your class teacher, please begin using email until this problem is fixed. (Ms. Cinque at, Ms. Gour at, and Mrs. O’Sullivan at )
  • World Diabetes Day will be Nov. 13th. Students should dress in blue for the day. They will be doing some physical movement during class to raise their awareness of diabetes.
  • Please visit Synergetic to book a parent-teacher conference for Nov. 14 or 15. You must book separately for each of your children and teachers are not able to access the system to book for you. When booking with Mrs. O’Sullivan, book with Deborah Lawrence (maiden name). The system will close Nov. 11th.
  • November 18th will be Prophet’s Day. No school for students.
  • Our PE lessons will no longer be swim. Students can come dressed in their PE shirt and shorts for PE days. (Or a uniform item they can move freely in.)

  • If you would like to order your child’s individual/class photos, you can visit the photographer’s website at The photographer will return sample photos soon with a website login.
  • We are looking for small cheap toys to be used for a “Novelty Store” in our new unit of inquiry. If you have small inexpensive used toys at home you are willing to part with and can send in, we would be happy to use them. (Items similar to what kids are given in loot bags at parties.) Many thanks to those of you who have contributed already.

This week in Readers’ Workshop, Reading Growth Spurt:

Sunday We are noticing the author’s “craft moves”, how the author keeps us interested. Students can practice the reading skills using RAZkids, library books, class book shopping books or other books they have at home. Please allow your child to choose what to read as it promotes enjoyment of reading which will help them become life-long readers.
Monday Students will think about how the author keeps us interested in the story.
Tuesday We are learning to put the story together to see the whole picture.

This week in Writers’ Workshop, Small Moment Stories:

Sunday Students will write the story “Wilma Who Will Be Rich Next Sunday” as a rewrite of Alexander Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday. Students can practice these writing skills by writing about books they are reading and having conversations about the plot, characters and meaning of stories they are reading.
Monday We are learning to support our opinion with proof from the story.
Tuesday Students will make a plan for their letter.

Students can use IXL Language Skills to support literacy. This week, students can do Consonant Blends and Digraphs, C.6.

Sunday We are practicing adding 9 by adding 10 and subtracting 1. Students can practice this skill on IXL, Addition, E.7.
Monday Students will practice fluency using facts they know to figure out facts they don’t know. Students can practice this skill on IXL, Addition – One Digit, E.17.
Tuesday Students will explore weight and using scales. Students can practice this skill on IXL, Addition – One Digit, E.16.

Unit of Inquiry

We will begin a new unit of inquiry this week. Students will be getting their second jobs and thinking about how to use their money better than last week. They will be asking questions about how we organize ourselves in the world and in a classroom. Students will have homework that helps them reflect on how to use money in a responsible way.
