Literacy

This week in Readers’ Workshop, Reading Growth Spurt:

Sunday We are learning to read words in phrases. Students can practice the reading skills using RAZkids, library books, class book shopping books or other books they have at home. Please allow your child to choose what to read as it promotes enjoyment of reading which will help them become life-long readers.
Monday Students will scoop up snap words.
Tuesday We are learning to keep track of our comprehension.
Wednesday Students will mark their thinking with a post-it note.
Thursday Review of skills learned this week.

This week in Writers’ Workshop, Small Moment Stories:

Sunday We are learning to magnify small moment stories. Students can practice these writing skills by writing small moment stories about family outings, things that happen at school. Stories should focus on one interesting event and not try to sum up a whole day/week/vacation.
Monday Students will add details to their stories using the 5 senses.
Tuesday Students will learn to craft powerful moments.
Wednesday We are learning to plan our stories using pictures and keywords.
Thursday Students will learn to tell the story in steps: beginning, middle and end.

Students can use IXL Language Skills to support literacy. This week, students can do Short and Long Vowels, E.2.

Math

Please do not attempt homework materials from the next unit of math until we have taught it. You will cause your child frustration and anxiety. Link to Everyday Math Support for Parents Please visit this site to support Unit 1 Math learning.

Tuesday Unit 1, Lesson 1.12 We are learning to read the temperature. Students can practice this skill on IXL, Measurement, S.1.
Wednesday Unit 1, Lesson 1.13 Students will assess their own learning and skills in Unit 1. As above
Thursday Review of Unit 1

Unit of Inquiry

Sunday, students will be bringing home some Unit of Inquiry homework. Students should interview a relative (grandparent, uncle, aunt or even a parent). They should use the guiding questions and can add some of their own. The conversation should be a learning experience where they use interview skills and note-taking skills, putting them together to learn about their family’s past. Students should record their answers and be ready to share them with the class by Sunday, Oct. 7th.

This week, students will consider artefacts from Dubai, both old and new. They will discuss how artefacts change over time and how they tell us about our history. In the coming weeks, we will be asking for students to bring in an artefact that tells us something about our family’s history. In class, we will talk about examples and get students thinking about an appropriate artefact from home.
