Volunteers needed for Mother Tongue Program

The ELL department is excited to introduce a new Mother Tongue program this year!  These sessions will be held every Thursday afternoon from 1:55 – 2:25 and each week will feature a different Mother Tongue.

We are looking for parents who would like to volunteer to come in during these times to read stories, play games or do crafts with students in their home languages!

If you are interested or would like to know more, please contact Zoulika Fraser: zfraser@uasdubai.ae

We look forward to working with you and supporting your child’s Mother Tongue!

G1 Newsletter – Week of September 16-20

Reminders:
  • Please make sure your child has a hat for recess.  It’s hot out there! We will have indoor recess if the “real feel” temperature reaches 45C.
  • Back to School Night will be Wednesday, Sept. 19th.  An email was sent to all parents on Saturday with all the details.
Reading  Unit 1 – Building Good Reading Habits
We are launching our Reading Workshop lessons for the year.  The first bend focuses on building good reading habits. Students will be getting familiar with the routines and thinking about what it means to be a good student during reading lessons.  They will begin to build stamina in their reading times.
Writing Unit 1 – Small Moments
In Writing Workshop, we will be brainstorming ideas to write about and learning where our supplies and writing materials “live” in the classroom.  Students will have opportunities to think about their school day and use small moments to plan and write stories.
Math Unit 1
We will work on:

  • finding one more and one less of a given number
  • comparing numbers
  • recording tally marks
  • writing the numbers 1-6
  • Calendar skills

Students will be learning new math games using manipulatives and math tools to develop their skills:

  • monster squeeze
  • penny-dice game
  • bunny hop on a number line
  • Top it! (comparing numbers – which is larger number)
Unit of Inquiry 1 – Relationships

Central Idea: Communication and respect can build positive relationships.

We have started our first Unit of Inquiry under the transdisciplinary theme of WHO WE ARE.

Students are getting to know each other.  We will begin learning about conflict resolution.  Students will learn how to use an “I-message” to communicate their feelings when a conflict arises.
