Best Wishes for a Happy Summer!

June22

Dear parents,

I want to thank you for your support and thoughtfulness this year.   I had an amazing time getting to know each and every one of your children; learning right along with them.  I’m confident they are well equipped for grade 5. Some parents have asked me what to do with their child over the summer so that they stay on top of things academically. From my personal experience as a mom, in addition to being an educator, my suggestion is to make sure they are reading daily, either in Raz Kids, a favorite book or other websites that support reading. For math, they can practice their multiplication tables, and use IXL as often as possible. But most importantly,  make sure that they have balanced time away from screens and lots of time to create and play. Studies show that play is as important as the 3 R’s in childhood.  http://https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/can_we_play

When it’s really hot outside and your at wits end because they’ve been on screens too long, encourage playing board games and play with them. Talk about sportsmanship and playing fair.  When you think they need a project,  save up recycled packaging and call it beautiful junk, make a space in your home where they can build and create with water bottles and boxes, and old pieces of wrapping paper, ribbons and buttons, etc.  I assure you they will be quite happy!

Finally I would like to say, this will be my last post on the Blog. I turned in my computer on Tuesday, and I do not have access to the school email address.  So I apologize if you have emailed me and I haven’t responded.  Should you like to contact me, I  can be reached at:  deborahmustafa@gmail.com or 0528844463.

With all good wishes for a safe and happy summer.

May your families be blessed this Eid al Fitr and always.

Salaam!

Ms. Deborah

Grade 4DM Update, May 30, 2017

May30

Dear parents,

Ramadan Kareem!  I hope you are well and enjoying this special time of year with family and friends. Last week at snack time, we looked at some videos of Ramadan around the world. The kids really enjoyed seeing these! I would like to invite any parents who are interested, to come in and give a presentation about Ramadan from their home culture. It’s always fun for kids to see the similarities and contrasts of this special time of year around the world, as well as learn something new from a different cultural perspective. If you’re interested, kindly email me.

With our Ramadan timings, the school day is short but sweet. However, we need to get through the curriculum as if the timing has not changed, so we’ve got lots to cover in class and out.

Below is whats happening:

Students should be at school by 8.18 – that’s when the whistle blows. Teachers will take children upstairs at 8.20 and classes will begin by 8.30. Please ensure that your child is at school by 8.18. Please keep reminding your child to bring their device and their hat to school.

Children who are not fasting are allowed to eat snack outdoors until indoor recess begins. There is only one recess time. Children who are fasting will be indoors for recess time. Children are not allowed to take devices to the recess room with them. They may take games from home, books to read, or arts and crafts.

PE

Students are to bring their swim gear as they will begin swimming this week.  Students who are fasting do not have to swim and they may go to the library instead. Those not fasting are required to participate in the swimming activity.

ART

Please make sure your child brings his/her devise to school!

Math

This week – children will finish off their fractions unit. Their Unit 7 test will be next Monday. This week they will learn about composing and decomposing fractions and also about finding fractions of sets. Children will solve problems involving fractions. I have posted some helpful videos teaching fractions below:

Language Arts

This will be focused around our Unit of Inquiry. Children will be writing and then blogging about their learning in our Unit of Inquiry lessons. In our unit of inquiry lessons children are learning about how different parts of the human body function.  After children have done some activities they will be writing an explanation about how certain parts of the body work. Reading will also be focused around our unit of inquiry as well.

*** They all learned how to create a personal BLOG in class on Sunday, and should be writing on it daily.

Additionally, the students will give a book review of their historical fiction book they read in book clubs. They may do this as a poster or a movie form, and present it to the class. This will be part of their Home Learning this week and weekend.

Field trip to  Dubai International Academy!

On Wednesday, 31st May, Grade 4 children from UAS will visit the Grade 6 exhibition at Dubai International Academy. This is another opportunity for our children to see exhibition projects and will help them to prepare for their own exhibition next year. We will leave school at 9am and return to school by 11am approximately.

If you do have questions or concerns, kindly email me on:

dmustafa@uasdubai.ae

Again, wishing all of you a blessed Ramadan.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Ms. Deborah

End of Year Celebration Grade 4DM!

May23

Dear parents,

We will be celebrating the end of the school year and the onset of the holy month of Ramadan in class this Thursday, May 25th.

I have asked the students to contribute a food or utensil item. The items on the list are what the students volunteered to bring. Though I encouraged healthy choices, we have more sweets and chips than we need. Kindly have a look at the item your child wants to bring, and if you agree, send it in, otherwise you may send a healthy alternative. If your child’s name is highlighted in yellow, that means they either could not make a decision or they were not in class today, so I ask that you send in with them a savoury (non sweet) item that is healthy.

End of Year Party-2ajvi6w

Many thanks for your cooperation and generosity.

Ms. Deborah
