June 18th-21st

We wrapped up our last week of KG-1 with

Superhero day

End of Year Celebration

Fun Day

This unfortunately will be the last blog post this year, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your cooperation and participation throughout the year in our program. It has been a great fun-filled and busy year! I have enjoyed seeing the children grow so much throughout the year – For me the most rewarding part of being a teacher.  I am going to miss returning to UAS after the summer; however I am looking forward to my next journey.

I wish everyone a relaxing summer and safe travels!

June 10th – 14th

This week in KG-1

This week we had our last Free Flow Free Inquiry for the year. We invited KG-2 to join in the fun with us, this meant the children were able to visit KG-2 classes as well.

We read many Pigeon stories written by Mo Willem such as “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!” “The Pigeon Needs a Bath” “The Pigeon Wants a Puppy!” and many more….. The children were artists as they followed step by step directions on how to draw the Pigeon. Check out the video below.

On Tuesday the children participated in Moving on Up Day! The children were split up into 3 groups. The visited 3 KG-2 classrooms and met the all the KG-2 teachers for next year – Mrs. Finney, Ms. Daramola and Ms. McCarthy. You will find out at the beginning of the school year who your child’s teacher will be. The purpose of Moving on Up Day is to give the children a chance to meet all the teachers and help for a smooth transition for the children into KG-2

Next Week

Next week is the last week for children in KG-1. It has been a fabulous year and as a teacher it is so rewarding to see how much the children have grown since the beginning of the school year. We have lots of things happening next week such as Super Hero Day, End of Year Celebration (EOY) and KG-1 Fun Day – please see the reminders below for more details on each event.

  • NO SCHOOL THURSDAY (tomorrow) or SUNDAY for Eid al Fitr holiday!

May 3rd-7th

This week in KG-1

The children worked with partners to try and come up with a solution to solve some problems from the Fairy Tales we have read.

What is STEM?

STEM is an exciting approach to teaching that stimulates children’s creativity and draws upon their natural curiosity. Students gain knowledge and experience in science, technology, engineering and math by working on engaging, project based activities.

On Tuesday the children brought in items for the Ramadan Fridge. The class was very excited for this!  They carried their own items across the street and placed the items inside the fridge. Thank you for sending in the food items.

The children completed various math centers based on graphing, counting, shapes and measuring.

Next week in KG-1

We will be reading Mo Williams stories and do activities around this. The children will get to visit KG-2 and meet all of the teachers during Moving On Up Day.

  • Show and Tell– Next week (June 10-14) is the LAST WEEK FOR SHOW AND TELL.
  • Portfolios– Your child will bring home their portfolio next Monday, June 11. These are complete and are yours to keep! We hope you enjoy them as much as we have enjoyed making them!
  • Moving Up Day… We will visit the KG2 classrooms, next Tuesday, June 12. We will begin promptly at 8:30, so please have your child at school by 8:15! Your child should WEAR THEIR PURPLE CLASS T-SHIRT. Parents will not attend this.
  • EOY Celebration- We are preparing for our End of Year Celebration for students and parents, on Tuesday, June 19, starting promptly at 11:30 in the MPH. We also have a song for Dads, so please try to attend if possible. We realize that some families will not be here as they will be traveling early, and it’s okay. Maybe just have those conversations with your child, that as we practice our songs in class, etc, they will understand that some people will not be in attendance. (It’s just the way it is at the end of the year).
  • Food for EOY Celebration- We are asking parents to contribute food for the EOY Celebration and we have assigned food lists for each class! PLEASE BRING THE FOOD TO THE MPH AND PLACE ON THE TABLES AROUND 11:20. WE WILL BEGIN OUR PROGRAM PROMPTLY AT 11:30! I would like for my parents to bring one tray of a main entree. For example: individual size pizzas, chicken nuggets, mini hotdogs, small sandwiches, etc. NO NUTS!
  • EID– There has been no formal announcement yet regarding the EID holiday. Most likely we will be off school 1-2 days. We will notify you when we receive the announcement.
  • LEAVING – If your plans for your child’s last day has changed from what you have told me already, PLEASE LET ME KNOW, so that we can have everything prepared and say our proper goodbyes!

May 27th-31st

This week in KG-1

Well done to this weeks performers who retold their stories – Richard, Dora, Abel, Tayyab, Daixin, Sheikha and Sara! Over the past two weeks we have all enjoyed listening to everyone retell their stories. So proud of all the effort put into making props, and practising at home.

We have been reading different versions of The Three Little Pigs – We even listened to a story which was from the Wolf’s perspective! We made puppets and the setting and retold to a partner and arranged the story in order.

Next week in KG-1

We will be identifying and problem solving based on the fairytales we have read over the past month. We will use a STEM approach to finding solutions.

  • SWIMMING- We officially ended our swimming sessions for the year! The children were very brave this year and learned so much about having fun and being safe in the water. I am very proud at how responsible and independent everyone has become during the year. Next year in KG2, they will move up to the “big pool” and I know they can’t wait!
  • LIBRARY- This week we checked out our last library book for the year! ALL LIBRARY BOOKS ARE DUE BACK ON WEDNESDAY. If your child has lost a book, please see Ms. Leslie to pay for it. We will continue to go visit Ms. Leslie until the last week of school.

May 20th-24th

This week in KG-1

We had a great first week of story presentations. The children were excited to present their stories to the class and each day we looked forward to the three children retelling. Well done to this weeks presenters – Nathan, Simeon, Sarah, Lyne, Yashar, Daniel, Hannah, Troy, Alia, Lyan, Ahmad and Omair. We look forward to listening to more next week!

We have been creating number stories in class. The children use objects to tell and act out a story through groups – for example: “There were 2 cats playing in the garden, 4 more came along, now there are 6”. Through creating number stories children begin to develop a solid understanding of the meaning of addition and subtraction and of the relationship between these two operations. This also helps them to develop a wider range of strategies for solving problems.

In swimming this week the children had fun having a class relay using kick boards

On Thursday we attended the Grade 2 musical in the MPH it was based on the story of Harold and the Purple Crayon

Next week in KG-1

We will be watching the rest of the story presentations. Continue to read and do activities based on the story of The Three Little Pigs.

  • Free Flow- We are continuing to wear our Purple class t-shirt each Sunday for our Free Flow.
  • Swimming- Next week will be our last time swimming.
  • Library– Our class will checkout books for the last time, this coming Wednesday, May 30. All library books will be due back the following week, as normal. Please make sure your child has returned any overdue book, so that no fines will be charged from the library!
  • Ramadan Fridges– KG1 is coordinating food/drink donations for our students to bring in for the Ramadan Fridge, next door at Spinney’s/Al Aresh. We will send home more details next week and will add it to our June calendar, so you will know what items you can send in and what day we are walking over to fill the fridge.
  • UAS Food Drive– Our PTSO is also sponsoring a Food Drive from now until next Thursday, May 31. KG1 is not planning to collect items in our individual classrooms (because we are bringing in the fridge items) but please feel free to send in items on the attached list if you like. We will make sure your child gets to place their donation in the PTSO boxes in the lobby.  (See Below)

Thursday May 24th – Grade 2 Musical

We will be attending the grade 2 musical this Thursday. Because the musical begins at 8:15, students who are here at 8:05 will attend. However, if you would like to bring your child later, they can remain on the playground and enter the building at 8:25. Students staying behind will go to Mrs. D’cruz’ class until the musical is over.

May 14th-17th

This week in KG-1

This week we read many stories about The Little Red Hen. We looked for similarities and differences in each version we read.

Ms Lamya Read the story to us in Arabic

We colored and shared Little Red Hen books with our friends and brought them home in our folders on Thursday.

We took the principle about helping each other  from the story of The Little Red Hen and used it as we made Butter.

Next week in KG-1

We will be reading many stories and versions of the Three Little Pigs. We have our first 12 students presenting their stories to the class.

RAMADAN KAREEM! Ramadan Schedule began today. Just a reminder that our morning schedule for KG1 has changed slightly. Students may not be dropped off before 7:30, as there is no supervision until that time. We will be staying on the playground each morning until 8:25since the weather is cooler then. YOUR CHILD SHOULD BRING THEIR WATER BOTTLE TO THE PLAYGROUND WHEN THEY ARRIVE AT SCHOOL EACH DAY. There is no need for you to wait for the whistle to blow, and we will do our attendance after 8:25.

Dismissal/pickup is normal 12:45 time for KG1. Lastly, if your child rides the school bus, remind them that they will be riding a full bus of ALL ages PK-Grade 12.
Also, in KG1 we continue to drink water and have our 2 regular snacks, so please send in as normal.
How We Express Ourselves- Our performances begin next week! We hope that your child has been planning, preparing and practicing for their presentations of re-telling a favorite story. Any props, costumes, books, puppets, etc. should be placed in a bag and sent in the morning of their performance. We will video each performance and send to you via blog or email link. PARENTS DO NOT NEED TO ATTEND, AS WE WILL VIDEO FOR YOU- THANKS!
FREE FLOW SUNDAYS- We are continuing our Free Flow each Sunday, so please send your child to school in their PURPLE shirt.
SWIMMING- We will continue to swim each week, until otherwise notified. Your child should wear their swimsuit to school, under their school uniform. We unfortunately do not have the time to dress them before swimming. After swimming, they are expected to put their school uniform back on (per school guidelines), and please wear or send regular velcro sneakers as flip flops and sandals are more likely to make them fall on the playground.
PARENT WORKSHOP- Thank you to all the parents who attended our first KG1 Parent Workshop on Tuesday! This was our first time using this format, and we hope to be able to offer these next year on a more regular basis. We will be sending the links to some of the presentations to you via email.

Beginning tomorrow and throughout Ramadan we are changing the morning schedule for PK/KG1. We will be staying on the playground until 8:30 because the weather is cooler. There is no need for you to wait for the whistle to blow.
Also, car riders should be picked up at 12:45, as usual. (The carpark will be quite busy as the rest of the school is dismissing at 1:00).
Thank you and Ramadan Kareem

This week the children finished their “Goldilocks” story bags (it came home on Thursday to share at home) they practised retelling it to a friend and then again in a small group. We acted out the story in small groups to the class each being a character.

We learnt a song about Goldilocks and the Three Bears

On Monday we were in the pool for swimming. The had a fabulous time! Over the next couple of weeks we will be learning and/or practising some swimming skills as well as having some fun in the pool!

A group of Grade 10 students came into the classroom on Tuesday to be our buddy readers. The children enjoyed listening to stories being read to them and sharing their name book and retelling stories.

April 29th – May 3rd

This week in KG-1

This week we read many versions of the story “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” The children enjoyed comparing the similarities and differences in each story we read and learning new vocabulary. Our activities in centers this week were based on Goldilocks. The children made puppets and the setting; helped made porridge; watched the story Goldilocks and the Three Bears; and practised our inventive spelling by pulling items out of the Mystery Box to write.

Unfortunately we were not able to swim this week due to the chlorine levels not being ready in the small pool, instead we had some water fun outside with water. We hope to be back in the pool next week for our first “Swim”. The children did a fantastic job getting ready for swimming and getting dressed independently.

On Tuesday we celebrated Hag Al Laila! We watched the Grade 3 come past the classroom and we got given candy treats by Rashids Mom (KG-1AM)

Mr Fields came into the classroom and talked to us about Friendships. What strategies we can try if we are feeling frustrated with a friend and also how to work through different scenarios that my arise. Ask your child what they learnt.

Well done to this weeks Rock Star Lyne for being a communicator with her peers and teachers!

Please allow your child to practice retelling and acting out the story with you at home, a couple times each week, so they will be comfortable. Any props, costumes, puppets, etc. should also be made at home soon, so they can practice with them. Let me know if you have any questions
  • No School on Sunday 13th May
