This week in KG-1

This week we began exploring different countries. The children visited Ms. Beam’s class where she taught them about Greece.  They tried food (Spanakopita) and learnt a greek dance

In Ms. Amber’s class they learnt about France where they made a flag.

The children painted their country flags which are displayed on our bulletin board outside the classroom along with the amazing looking international dressed people from our countries that were created at home.

In Centers this week the children painted pictures of themselves by identifying their  skin, eyes and hair color; worked together to complete a large floor puzzle of people wearing different clothing from their country; explored starfall on the ipad; and used magnify glasses to find letters hidden around the world.

Every month Mr. Fields comes in to the classroom. He has been talking about how to be a good listener and noticing how people are feeling through facial expressions. Here the children are playing “Simeon Said” they need to be listening to Mr Field’s directions.

On Wednesday Abel had his first day with us in KG-1. We would like to welcome our newest friend into our class.

Ms Hanna handed out our top IXL’ers for the month of February. Well done to Nathan, Lyne and Sarah. Our class has also spent the most hours in math and literacy on IXL for KG-1 – Keep up the great work everyone!!!!

This week in KG-1

The children have been learning ‘How to Read’ They can read through using the pictures to tell a story and from memory of familiar books they have been read many times over.  The children select two books from the book shelf and find a place in the classroom to individually “read” these books for  five minutes. At the end we choose 3 children to share what they have been reading. This is a great activity to do at home.

As a class the children helped read the story “Cows in the Kitchen”

In Centers this week we focused on the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. The children worked on activities related to the story. Colored a book of the story to share at home; drew a picture and dictated their favourite part; measure various objects using caterpillars; retold the story using props and arranging the story in order on a caterpillar; and feeding the hungry caterpillar fruits by rolling the dice, identifying the number and counting out the items.

On Thursday we had our sports day. the children participated in 6 different activities and games. They were an egg and spoon race; yoga; an obstacle course; scooter board relay; ribbon dancing and long jump.
